Separate Tagging Program necessary?
« on: November 14, 2002, 08:16:06 am »

Been 'lurking' too long....about to invest and get serious with MJ and enjoy all options and versatility it provides.   Congratulations on a fine product.

Only query I have is if MJ will handle all ID3 tag updating and corrections or should one use a separate stand-alone 'Tagger" to fix MP3 files before using the files in MJ ?

Thanks for any advice.

Welcome smOOzz!

MJ should handle all of your tagging needs with ease.

Play around a bit and let us know if you have any questions...

Hi

I'm a registered user of Dr. Tag, Tag & Rename and Helium2. I don't have any of them installed. MJ handles all my tagging needs.

While I may be the odd man out ... I think MJ has great tagging capabilities, but for Mass-Tagging (automated) .. I much prefer Dr. Tag.

MJ doesnt have (or I havent been able to find) a way of writing tags based on filename if the files in your library have multiple schemas (artist - name & artist - album - name & artist  - album - track - name) .. you would have to grab only the one Schema and work with those then move onto the next ...

Also, it doesnt have logic to be able to Grab the info from the ID3V1 tag (if there) or the ID3V2 tag (if there) of the Filename Scheme (whatever it may be) and collapse it into the best tag info ... I've found much better luck with external programs (ok, Dr. Tag!) ...

For editing your LIBRARY (ie youve got groups of files by artist or genre or something ... anything that is grouped) You DEFINITELY need something like MJ  to help with the tagging ... Personally, it takes BOTH to maintain a decent library ...

While MJ does handle basic tagging duties admirably, there are more robust solutions for multiple-file tagging, special situations, etc. I'll throw in a vote for MP3 Tag Studio. Not the prettiest app, but I've found it to be remarkably flexible.

Maybe I don't understand your point - When you're looking at the File Properties window and bring up Tools > Rename Files from Properties, you can choose folder and/or filename attributes for renaming, and select from or edit the rules. Other than your comments about v1/v2 tags, what is the improvement that you would like?

I think what he's after is a 'smart tagging' feature that I requested a few times. MJ basically analyses the mp3 and tries to work out for itself what the naming format is and then uses the correct format rather than just one specific format which you have to choose.

If you select loads of songs all with the naming format:
- artist - track # - name
but also by accident select one with:
- artist - name
and then choose a file name format to use to get the tag, MJ doesn't use any smart logic to say oh look, one's shorter than the others, it must require a different naming format. It just tries to wrongly work out the properties based on the format you supplied.

Nila, EXACTLY ... "Smart Tagging" ... I want to, basically, put in a bunch of Schemas/Filters/File-naming-conventions ... and MJ would dynamically assign the correct one to a file IF there wasnt already a tag for the file :) ...

Keep in mind, it should not STRIP off any other tags (embedded pics, proprietary tags, etc) ...

AND, if there is an ARTIST tag already ... but the file name is of the convention "NAME (track#).mp3" ... MJ should Leave the Artist Info in the tag, ADD the Name & Track # tags ... and it would be just DANDY if it renamed the file (according to a pre-defined convention ... ie, MP3 Options ...

Again, this is why I use a different program ... That can do all this already ... Why re-invent the wheel ...

i also have Dr Tag, mj has the same options as Dr tag and i do not use dr tag any longer.

MJ will allow you to change the tags based on the file name the same way Dr tag does.

the option is under the tools option called "Fill properties from filename"

as many formats i wrote a program call gonkulater that will allow many formats and fill the fields from the file name all at the same time. it works but i am thinking about improving it.

I tried Dr Tag too.
Love the program. To be honest, it has quite a few features that MJ doesn't.
I really like the GUI too, designed for quick and fast tagging.

It has features to tell you about the seperate tags for id3 v1 and v2 and will let you clear either tag or copy from one to the other etc. It has a bunch of other features too which I cant remember at the moment.

Ok, here's some idea's from MJ that I got by using Dr Tag.

- 1 - I'd LOVE to see MJ implement a toolbar specifically for tagging. By having it as a seperate toolbar it would allow people to choose to show it or hide it at preferance. It would allow one click access to a lot of features which would really speed things up when tagging a lot of files. This could possibly even be added the the 'properties' toolbar.

- 2 - Choice of words we can have kept as lower case when doing 'title case' etc. Same with list of upper case words.

- 3 - To create rename scheme - simply check boxes for which properties to use, set order, specify seperator and get to see a preview below. Dont have to type in or remember which keywords to use.

- 4 - Can save naming schemes to create a list of ones we want to use.

- 5 - Ability to start song at a certain point in each track, like intro mode.

- 6 - Ability to see which id3 v1 or v2 tags are set and be able to edit these independantly or clear them individually and copy from one to the other. Right now v9 wont even read id3v1 tags for me :(

- 7 - Before apply changes to tags have an optional prompt coming up saying: This will Modify X files.
Apply    Discard
maybe even give it an option like in IE where by you can: Never ask me this again - so it sets it in the options box and helps interactively encourage a user to set their options to get MJ how they want it.

- 8 - Generate id3 tag from filename - tries to guess format and auto fill in tag info easily and quickly. Makes it even quicker by giving it as a button option so it's one click to fill in a file's info. (possibly allow us to specify the formats that the files will most likely be in if: X segments so we could set what format 3 segments is, 4 segments is etc and the most likely seperator.)

- 9 - Playcount is editable so we can change it if we want to.

- 10 - Reverb, pre-mix etc can be added to each song.

- 11 - Ability to right click and swap id3 fields.

- 12 - I know you try to offer functionality without cluttering with too many buttons etc but a nice toolbar can make the world of difference to ease of use and functionality. Most programs offer a standard toolbar layout for most features with MJ being the rare exception. It only offers access to like playlists, libraries, options etc. No buttons for tools, doing tasks etc. A MS Office style whereby this could be customised to the users needs with which toolbars to show, which buttons to show etc would make MJ soo much faster and would still allow it to have that minimalistic feel for those that wanted it.

I like the ideas for tagging, although some seem a little too specialised.

I do think that an easier interface to rename and move files based on their tags needs to be implemented which will allow for custom fields to be used also when renaming files.

I keep classical music and have a separate field for [Movement]. This means that a lot of my music has the name [Name] and so the [ARTIST] - [NAME] scheme doesn't help me much.
