Notes from v8 - possible to restore?
« on: October 24, 2002, 11:46:50 am »

Is it possible to import my notes from the v8 library backup into v9?  As compulsive as I tend to be, I'm tempted to manually restore the notes to 10,000 files, but I am going to fight the urge and accept the fact that I've lost them.  It would sure be nice, however, if there was a way to accomplish this.

I can't reopen v8, receiving a message that the database is newer than v8 and it won't open.  I tried, per Jim's suggestion to reboot and install again, without success.

I'm committed to v9 now and have manually restored all of my cover art images and don't want to lose those changes to the v9 library.

I know it's a longshot, but is it possible to export the v8 library into Access or Excel and then import it into v9? Thanks for any help.

When 9 gets installed, it puts a backup of the version 8 library under the MJ\Data directory.

You'll need to use that if you want to go back to 8.

About notes, are they still in the file tags?  If so, MJ should pick them up. (but obviously isn't)

Otherwise, it's possible that somehow they didn't get upgraded but then got overwritten in the tag with empty strings.

We'll play around on our end.

Sorry for the problems Shelly...

The problem with that is that I can't open v8.  It gives me a message that the database is too new to open and I don't know how to point it to the backup.  I only wanted to open v8 to see if the cover art and notes were present in that database.

I can't view them via v9.  I tried to look at the tags in a couple of different tag editors.  One indicates that all of the tags in the library are invalid and another does not display any v2 information.

That's what I was afraid of.  :-[

It's not like you didn't warn us of negative effects from upgrading at this point.  When all is said and done,  I'm still pleased that I made the plunge.  It's an awesome program!

Shelly,
You have to find your MJ backup files and copy them over the v9 files which are in C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Data.

Thanks, Jim.   I opened v8 with the library created by MJ during the v9 upgrade, but notes and coverart were missing.  I then opened v8 with the backup that I created prior to upgrading to v9 and was thrilled to see my notes were intact!

I'm now waiting while MJ imports my library into v9 again.  Don't think I'm going to stay awake long enough for it to finish, so I'll let you know tomorrow if notes and cover art are preserved.

The file upgrade process went much faster this time around.  Neither notes or cover art are viewable, however.   Is this a problem with my system or a bug in v9?

Not importing cover art is definitely a bug.  I had this too although not with all my files.  Not sure about Notes as I never fill that field in...
