custom field import to MJ9 from MJ8
« on: September 30, 2002, 12:14:15 pm »

I have been using MJ8 to build a music database of about 1,000 CD's from my collection. The music is largely classical and jazz with some rock. I have spent a good part of my limited spare time this summer building the database including scanning in cover art and some liner notes (the online databases are thin on classical and jazz cover art).

I have been testing MJ9 on a separate PC from the main MJ database and have imported a large portion of the database for testing and have a few questions:

(1) I have used the three custom fields of MJ8 for composer, conductor and orchestra/ensemble. Is there a way to import this info into MJ9?

(2) ID3V2.4 has fields for composer, conductor and orchestra and many more. Why not just support 2.4? (Unlimited custom fields in MJ9 is still a good thing to have, of course.)

(3) I embedded the cover art images in each MP3 file (hard drives are cheap) when I originally imported the files into MJ8 but the art does not seem to appear in MJ9, s'up with dat?

(4) Prior to my summer's quest, I evaluated almost all of the competition. There is nothing close to MJ which raises two questions; why does MusicMatch get so much attention? and, two, how do you guys make money offering such a powerful product for $25?

Excellent piece of code, I look forward to MJ9 as it develops.

Because 2.4 is for MP3, not for all audio formats. For example, ogg files can have as many tags you want.

I use the custom1 field to log the highest chart position a song reached so I would be interested in the answer to this.

I have typed this in manually because I want the UK position so I can't use Chart Finder and this is the only thing keeping me from trying out v9.

Custom fields should come through in the 8 to 9 upgrade.  Just make a library backup first in case there's a bug.

Sorry KingSparta I hadn't realised you now had a UK Top 40 database.  :-[  I guess it was longer than I thought since I last went to your site.

Downloading now  ;D

Unless I Am Mistaken In MJ9 There is not Custom1 - Custom3 Or anyway to turn them on so they showup in the listing.

So how would they come thru?

If it detects those fields were used, it'll create them in the new database.

With version 9, you'll be able to just create a database field like "Chart Ranking" using the SDK and add your info there.  Should be much cleaner...

(of course, this isn't ready yet :P )

well maybe on a MJ8 to MJ9 convert but that really did not work for me and i had to uninstall MJ9 and then Reinstall it. It seems when MJ9 convered the database it did not work and none of the files would play. it kept asking me to select a file.

The MP3's do have A Custom1 and when i imported them again in MJ9 it did not create a Custom1
