Problem importing files into MJ
« on: December 26, 2002, 10:10:47 pm »

I have downloaded some *.mpga files and can not import them into MJ.  Even if I try to play the file from it's saved location I get a warning message saying
"please select a file to play".

I am at my wits end with this,  if anyone has any ideas or knows what the problem could be I would appreciate the feedback.

One other thing,  I can't seem to import any music files into MJ now since upgrading to MJ 8.  I have to play them from where they are saved to,  then edit each file once playing.  That then stores the file in my MJ library.

Thank you for any help  ?

try to use the option
  • remove deleted and then reimport.

when going from MJ7 to MJ8 over a year ago i never did get the library to work correctly. I always had to completly delete the Library files and start from Jump street.

It only seems to be one Album that I can't play.  I've tried it several times and the files won't open.

If I completely delete my library within MJ how will I know that it won't choose not to import any and then I'll have alot of files to go through manually.

I'm considering trying another program for my music copying because I'm having so many problems since I upgraded to MJ 8 and I've tried emailing support with no luck.

klm > I have downloaded some *.mpga files and can not import them into MJ

Check your Settings>Options>File Associations and see if mpga is checked ( should be by default in v8 ). If they still won't play then there may be something funky with the files.

ala King: Best bet is to delete the library (but not the files...of course) and reimport with Tools>Import Media. Your import problems will go away.

Thank you Xen for the feedback,  good to know someone has some helpful advice.

The mpga file extension was marked.  This is not just one file I'm having problems with,  it's a whole album.

I don't suppose I'll ever get to the bottom of it.

Thank you anyway

I don't know if this will help but it's worth a try.

I couldn't get MJ to import any of my mpeg movies, but I was able to right-click them and add them to playing now. Once they were in playing now I could right-click again and import to library from there.

You can obviously select a heap of files this way, I did about 400 mpeg movies in 4 lots but I probably could have done them all in one go.

Another trick I do sometimes (especially with kazaa downloads) is to change the file extension. Some applications don't seem to care whether the extension is accurate or not, as long as it and the file itself are both supported by that application.

(In case you don't know, to change file extensions go into tools>folder options>view and make sure 'hide file extensions for known file types' is unchecked then just rename the file with the new extension. At least that's the process for win2k)

Best of luck,

Thanks for the help FB.

I've tried everything you have suggested with no luck on one particular album.  I think the files must be corrupt,  although I've downloaded them several times from a music website all with the same results.

It's a stange one... I don't think I'll ever get to the bottom of it.

Thanks again
