Anyone have a "text cleanup" plug-in???
« on: November 11, 2002, 01:06:26 pm »

I would really like a MJ plug-in which does the following:

1.  Changes all the song titles, artists and album names to capitalize only the first letter.
2.  Gets rid of extra spaces in same.
3.  Substitutes characters in same (e.g. :,?, etc.) which become "_" when using "Update Filenames from Properties."
4.  Renames song titles "Artist - SongName" for albums with "Various Artists" where the various artist names is put in the "Artist" field by the database.  This causes the album to be broken up because the artist differs.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

>> 1.  Changes all the song titles, artists and

you can do this in MJ now, use the Clean option

>> 3.  Substitutes characters in same (e.g. :,?, etc.)

>>  from Properties."
you can do this in MJ, Use Fine And Replace, already in MJ

>> Gets rid of extra spaces in same.
you should be able to do this in MJ

just do a find and replace "  " (two spaces) replace with " " (One Space). i just tested it, it works.

>> Renames song titles "Artist - SongName" for
>> albums with "Various Artists"
correct the file names and use rename, it works

Thanks King.  I'll try it.

Some of this stuff is not that obvious without some guidance.

With regard to #4, are you saying to "Fill properties from Filenames"?

well MJ and other programs don't have ESP your just going to need to correct the artist name, or if it is in the file name get it from there.

this may need to be done manualy or from the file name as you sugested.

ESP would really not be necessary.  The situation is this:

The song names are in the song field.  The artist field is populated with the artist from each song - no 2 are the same.

What I want to do is form the song name by concatenating the artist and songname with a " - " separator.  Then I would enter the phrase "Various Artists" in the artist field for all the songs in one fell swoop by adjusting the properties of all songs at once.

Now, from what I can tell, I need to retype each song title, preceeding it with the artist name - which is in the artist field for that song.

Any ideas.

i don't see why you would even enter "Various Artists" if you knew the artist name.

Maybe I Am Not Following Your Logic

Artist: Beatles
Song: Help!

Re-Named File: "Beatles - Help!.MP3"

Why Would You Enter "Various Artists"?

If I leave the individual artists in the "Artist" field, I lose the grouping of the songs as an album.

Many albums that are a compilation actually come up from the database the way I am describing - songname is artist concatenated with song title, and artist is "Various" or "Various Artists".

Make sense??

Scratch that...I don't know what I was thinking!!!
The albums groupings are fine.

Its just that most albums come up the way I am describing naturally and I'd like consistency in my database and...

I prefer this method as it keeps all my compilations together under "Various Artists" and allows me the freedom of also having a Genre for the album.

I Understand now, sort of

personaly I don't see it ever happening, i think thats wy MJ has View Scheme's you can do this in there, and then just select "compilations" and have them all listed.

Right Click On Media Library
Add View Scheme's

also read the help file, but this might work for you.

King,

Thanks.

I'll play with it and see what happens.

I also think I might be able to trick it by using "Fill Properties From Filenames"...

I knew something simple as that had to be in MJ/MC, I just didn't know where to look!

Actually, I think Clean File Properties will do all 3 of those... It will fix the capitalization, remove extra spaces, and replace _ with spaces.
