Media Jukebox 8 to Media Center 9
« on: December 23, 2002, 09:00:22 pm »

JRiver sent an e-mail on 12/19/2002. It said:
Quote
Media Center will be priced at $39.98 on release, but we have a better
offer for you now  -- through December 31, you can purchase the new Media
Center version for $29.98. If you already own a version 8.0 license, you
can upgrade to MC now for $7.98.

Well, I just went through the recent posts about this, and now I'm totally confused.

I got here because I downloaded Media Center 9 beta, as suggested in the e-mail. Now, when I launch Media Jukebox 8, I get Media Center 9. But it shows a prominent ad asking me to buy it! For $24.98!!!

Since I only purchased Media Jukebox 8 on 11/27/2002, what gives? Do I need to pay more? Can I return to Media Jukebox 8? Why did I listen to you, and install Media Center 9?

Questioningly, David.

Try restoring your V8 license.  See this section for details:

Jim,

Thank you for your suggestion.

I did a key restore as you suggested. Also went to the link describing version 9 license/purchase FAQ. That says:
Quote

If you have purchased Media Jukebox 8 and want to upgrade to Media Center 9, make sure Media Jukebox 8 is correctly licened, (sic) install Media Center 9, and click the "Buy" option from within the program. Verify the price is correct and that the product contains the word "upgrade;".

Tried that. The price is still $24.98, not the promised $7.98. There is no word "upgrade" in the product description.

Kindly advise. Thanks. David.

I want to add to this thread a second issue. I orginally purchased MJ 7 and upgraded to MJ 8. When the procedure for upgrading from MJ8 -> MJ9 gets cleared up, will I be able to upgrade for the $7.95 price.

I realize this is a holiday week but please expedite a response since your offer expires Dec 31.

No, since you had a MJ7 License and J river Let You Use  MJ8 For Free.

For you MC9 would require a Buy

I think you can get it at the $29.98 Untill Dec 31st after that it is $39.98

apparently not....
i've talked back and forth with a couple of the jriver people and apparently there will not be any upgrade deals for version 7 owners....

i could live with and accept that but since 8 came out in what june? that means people are stranded in the cold with no upgrade path at all and they just bought the thing less than 6 months ago...

thants downright insane :)  :(

me i bought in april..... so i'm more like 7 months and in the cold..... but that is really crazy...... i wouldnt pay it (only 7 months out) but if you leave a customer that bought your product a mere 6 months ago totally out in the cold..... you can't expect to be around very long i wouldn't think...

From The License Page:

>> An MJ version 8 license purchased by
>> December 3, 2002, will work with MC version 9.
so where is the problem?

if someone bought MJ8 6 months ago they are good, sounds clear to me.

MJ8 was on sale for almost a year including when it was in beta.

at that point it was the users choice.

Besides MJ7 users got to use MJ8 for free without an upgrade fee. So if they would have charged a $15.00 upgrade fee for MJ8 and $15.00 For MC9 that would be around $30.00

How much is the MJ7 to MC9 right now? $29.98 so since it is the same I have Dry Eyes over here and I slept good too.

[official reply]

There is no special upgrade price from V7.  King's comments are correct.  V8 was on sale in December of 2001.  Both were available in several months of 2002.  People had a choice of what to buy for all of 2002.

Even now, people are still buying V8 because it is more stable.

The biggest problem we have in making updates available at special prices is one of management.  It would increase the complexity of our licensing techniques and of our support if we offered upgrades of all previous versions.  We've got plenty to do as it is.

I'm sorry if you feel we don't care about you.  We do.  That's why we offered a free upgrade to V8.

also from your press releases i seem to see that 8 didnt come out till june of this year (2002) meaning that anyone that bought your program less that 6 months ago can still be out in the cold.... i am really confused here ...  what is right ? sorry :(
