Real Alternative in Media Center
« on: October 16, 2003, 05:52:40 pm »

I have QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative installed on my computer (both from http://www.freecodecs.com/) because I can't stand either of the real apps (especially RealPlayer).  I have not tried to use QuickTime files, but RealPlayer files (such as those on Amazon.com) will not play in MC.  I get the message asking to download RealPlayer, as it is not found on the system.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  The files do play fine using the Media Player Classic that comes bundled with the pack, but I'd prefer to use MC.  Thanks!

Quick time formats will work, i think MC only work with Real Player 8 codecs and not with the new ones that Real Alternative uses.

If the Real Alternative codecs don't work with MC, what good are they?

Yeah.  I was hopeing to use it so I wouldn't have to install Real Player, but it doesn't seem to place nice with MC.

I may be mistaken, But - - -
I seem to recall it eing said that if you try to play a 'real' file in MC without having Real Player installed MC will download the Real codec it needs on the fly and only install the codec NOT the program.
Try a search on the Interact Forum for the thread, I think it was about 2 or 3 months ago.
Or perhaps someone else will remember more about this and also post.
