Watched folders?
« on: October 17, 2003, 10:05:59 am »

Hey, folks -

I haven't seen anything mentioned about this lately, but is there any plan to put "watched folders" into MC9 so that music dropped into designated folders is automatically imported into the library? It's hard to live without that feature once you've had it.

A lot of ppl had request this before and I think the standard answer was that by having a "watched folder", the startup or shutdown time of MC might be slowed down due to the searching of the folder.

Maybe a happy medium here would be a checkbox in the Startup Settings, "Update library at startup." That way, those who want it could have it, but those who would choose the performance can have it their way too....

Just a thought,

That's interesting... other folks are doing it (WMP, MusicMatch) and it seems not to bog the program down too much. It's really handy if you download a lot of music b/c you don't have to worry about doing a manual import. Wonder if someone has the know-how to write a plug-in or a scheduler function for that...

As I pointed out before in a previous post, at least have a function for a one touch update/import.

Define a list of folders containing your music - then, when you push the button, MC will:

1) Scan every song in its database with those folders in their path, and make sure they're still physically there
2) If they're not, flag them for possible removal
3) Perform an import on each of the defined folders
4) If the flagged files from step 2) are still not present, then go ahead and remove them - however, if they were found during 3), update their info and leave them

This process is designed to: add new music, and track changes in the location of existing music without losing any database info about them (eg. playcounts, presence in playlists).

Once it's defined, perhaps the Media Scheduler can run it periodically?

Would still LOVE this feature and still think the answer is just to not make it do the check upon initial startup.

Instead make it happen in the background and give it a low processor priority so it doesn't get noticed.
Or set it to do it after X minutes of inactivity!

Not to worry . . .

MC10 comes with a personal assistant who will do all this for you.

here is how i do it.

- i drop any new stuff into a new folder.

- i find it using my computer, and add it to playing now.

- rate it while its playing.

- depending on how it scores ( my rule of thumb is keep any album that scores a rating of 3 & above for at least half the tracks) otherwise using my computer, move to Junk folder.

- if the new album scores well, i move it to whatever folder based on genre, and then import it.

if there was watched folders, it would automatically import, but i would still have to move it afterwards based on where i want it to live.

if my interface was via hairstyle only, watched folders might be interesting.
