Update Library - using tags question
« on: October 22, 2003, 03:55:28 pm »

I understand that this will update your database with the file tag information - but let's say I have used Chart finder, or audio analysis - and this data is not saved in my tags - but saved in the database only - If I update will this information get deleted?

If so here is a request - can you make it so we can specify what part of the tags to update - artist, title, ect - so all this data in the database is not lost?

thanks.

I've always been a bit confused by the "update" functions as well.  Under what situation would the "library" change when the "tags" did not?  I guess I'm not clear exactly what the "library" IS.  I thought the "library" was just a collection of all the tag data for all the songs, but if this is so, when would the library information ever change without changing tags?

Thanks for any more detail explination/clarification on this (I"m just not getting it from the online manual),

When the file being edited is read-only, then a copy of the file is made (so Cheech and Chong - Basketball Jones.mp3 is copied to Cheech and Chong - Basketball JonesXXXXX.mp3). If you move or copy the original to some other location, then you'll still see the old tag info when viewed from another editor. However, once you get rid of the read-only attribute, the changes are applied to the original and the copy is deleted. To see what tags are actually in the file, highlight the file and select File Type Info from the AW.

xeno - let's say tags haven't changed - or even if they have - when you update library using tags - if there is data that is on the database (lyrics, album anaylsis data (bpm, intensity), chart position) - if this data isn't stored in the tag - is it deleted from the library? or left alone? - For instance - I just cleared all the comments in my tags - yet I know that the database has chart information in the comments block - if I update per tags - will it delete all the chart information?

The only time that the DB and tag info (for mutually stored info) becomes de-synchronized is the Read-Only case mentioned above. There is really only 2.5 relationships...

1) data stored in the tags AND the library (ie artist)
2) data stored in the library only (ie number of times played)
2.5) data stored in obscure tags (user defined) that MC doesn't see out of the box, but probably could be configured to do so

So yes, a null entry in the Comments library field will save a null entry in the Comments tag.

PS: There is one more desynch method...using another program (ie Tagger) to do a tag edit. If you don't have MC update the library, then common values (case 1) will be mismatched.

Why is it that immediately after ripping some songs off a CD, "update tags" will make changes?  I haven't done anything to the files, so why are changes made?  Subsequent "updates" indicate that nothing is changed.

Thanks,

My guess is...

MC is updating the library with data not kept in the file (case 2), hence that is why you don't see any obvious changes. It may also be auto optimizing the DB (such as re-indexing, compacting, etc.) as new records are added.
