(Image) tagging questions
« on: October 20, 2003, 12:02:23 pm »

yo yo,

Couple questions about image tags:

1) When I tag images using MC and then "rename files from properties," when I open the images using Windows Explorer, none of the (MC) tags are listed.  This is important for me b/c when I give a burned photo CD, I'd like the recipient to have access to the tags even if she doesn't have MC (e.g., the "comment" field).

2) How can I add more fields to the defualt tag categories?  E.g., Is there a way to add a second comment field?

Thx.

The tags WHERE POSSIBLE are stored in the files themselves. Some file formats dont support tags being written to the actual files, others do.

It will depend what type of images you are trying to save the tags to.

jpeg's I think can save the tags internally, not sure what other formats.

You'll need some software which is able to read the data inside the files - not sure if XP does or not.

As for extra fields - Tools - Options - Tree & View Settings - - Add
Make whatever fields u want.

MC writes JPEG tags.

Since there isn't a flexible standard, we created a clean XML based tagging system.  It's fast, lightweight, and easily edited / removed.

Search the forums for more details.

Can you give me a query to run since I have no idea what you're talking about?

I tried: "JPEG tags" "XML based tagging system" "XML tags" and "image tags."

 ?

There was a discussion here:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=15039;start=msg101078#msg101078

It was about a year ago.  MC has come a long way since then.

That may be a good discussion but I really can't tell as I am an attorney not a computer person and it's WAY OVER MY HEAD.

Is there anyway someone can give me concise instructions regarding export of image tags?

I'm using XP.  When I burn the MC images, windows explorer does NOT contain the properties I tagged the JPEGS with (e.g., Artist etc.).

Why not?  How can I remedy this?  How can I ensure that the MC tags stay with the images irrespective of the program used to view them?

That's the hitch -- there's no accepted, flexible JPEG tagging standard.  That means there's really no way to deliver what you want.  If you want all the library information with your JPEG, just burn a copy of MC on the same disk.

(XP supports EXIF tags, but again, they're very limited in what they can hold)

You may want to restart with what exactly is the end goal you are trying to accomplish.  For example, there may be a way of giving people labelled photos through a DVD burning of a slide show.  Not using JPEG tags at all.   There are a lot of creative people here that will come up with all sorts of ideas, but since you were asking about one specific solution, you got a specific answer.

I am interested in this as well as I plan to make CDs or DVDs of photos and videos for Christmas gifts.  I have not put a lot of thought into or tried anything out yet.

I hope that helps....

Is there any chance you could add an option to modify the EXIF tag and to create EXIF tags if they don't exist for an image?  I've gone through and sorted out a whole bunch of date issues on a bunch of images but it appears that MC won't add or fix the EXIF tags on them.
