Video mpgs freeze for a few seconds

Sorry if this has already hashed out, I have just reformatted both my hd's installed XP Pro and reinstalled MC latest ver. for some reason when I play video clips they somtimes freeze for a few seconds then continue, I may have the wrong codec but unsure how to upgrade this, any help would be great guys, thanks  Bruce
