Start-up errors
« on: December 02, 2003, 05:31:52 pm »

I've started getting the following 2 errors everytime I start MC:

Couldn't create Web remote listener
Failed to Start remote server

Any ideas?

Have you got it set to run on a port that something else is already running on?

(Tools->Options->Startup: Run Remote Server on port xxx)

It's just set to run on port 80 (default) and works fine.

I used to get that randomly too for no apparent reason.
It'd come sometimes and then not at others.
Doesn't seem to be happening for me recently though - not sure if the latest build doesn't contain it or what ;)

I think it would help if I knew what Web remote listener and remote server are/do.

Do you guys know?

OK. So now I'm intrigued.

How can I find out what else may be using port 80 so that I can get this web remote thing working?

I've checked the obvious with no joy.

Help appreciated.

Thanks

well what happens if you try going to

http://localhost/

(it would default to :80 anyway)

on that machine? If there's a webserver of some kind running on that port you should see something in the browser.

You can always just pick another port in the options - I'm just running mine on 199.

Then I connect to it from your web browser as http://localhost:199/

or replace localhost with the computer's name or IP address if you're accessing it from another PC.

So, I changed the port to 199 and I can now control my MC PC from another. The sound comes from the MC PC not the one I'm using to access it.

The question I have (and I'm probably missing something) is why would I want to?

Or am I not using it correctly?

You're not missing anything, that's how it works.

Why would you want to use it? Maybe you wouldn't... but people who have PDAs wireless connected to their home network might want to so they could use it as a kind of intelligent remote control.

Or you might have wireless headphones/speakers in a different room from the main PC and want to control it from another PC. Or you might just want to search through your music library from another PC.

If you want to have the music actually playing through a remote PC then you can run Media Server and connect to it from another PC running Media Center.
