Recent problems with Mserv and Tivo
« on: December 05, 2003, 07:06:03 pm »

In a couple areas of my playlists, suddenly several playlists do not show up.  The full library shows up if i connect from another PC with Media Center, but from Tivo several are missing.  I have been trying to find a pattern, but none yet.  This has been with the last severl 9.1.* releases, am about to try 10.0.* to see if it works.

I do see some of my Smartlists, i see ALL of the default lists, but some subset of my created playlists do not show up.

Does something happen if it hits a "bad" file -- i.e, a non-Mp3 or a file missing from the library or something.  Its like something is happening to make it skip those particular playlists.

Am currently 9.1.313 going to 10.

Are the file types different?  WMA, MP3, etc.

99.9 % are MP3 (VBR).  A couple odds and ends are streams.  Dont think any are WMA.

Okay, some more data points....

I had a list called "Dinner" and it was not showing up on Tivo.  Looked in MC and it was a manual list that i never added songs to.  I added the songs and now it shows up.

Examples of lists that are NOT showing up are:

Smartlist: playlistid==883833631 [Genre]=[Alternative] ~t=360 ~sort=random [Rating]=>3

Smartlist:  playlistid==883833631 [Genre]=[Lounge],[Trance] ~t=240 ~sort=random

An example of one that IS working:

Smartlist: playlistid==883833631 [Genre]=[Eighties] ~t=60 ~sort=random

For both of the ones that are NOT working on Tivo, they do populate with songs on the PC.

Am now on 10.0.010 and same results.

Is there a limit in the number of songs that can be in a Tivo playlist?

Thanks,
Rob.

As a sidebar, unrelated I think to this issue, the way I get Media Server to work is to select it from the menu, have it crash after about 12-15 seconds and say "Media Server has caused an error in JRREADER.DLL, Media server will now close.", then I select Debug (not Close), which creates 4 Dr. Watson windows that i dismiss.  They say "An error occured while loading c:\program files\J river\media center\data -g  The system cannot find the file".  Each of the four have slight variations.

Once I clear those, Media Server is actually running and then it works fine.  Since I run Win ME, i just live with it -- i dont expect you to fix Win ME issues, its a sucky OS.

Another thing i just live with is the MC never finds my CD Burner.  Its a HP SureStore CD-Writer 6020.  I have burned hundreds of CDs, i just always have to do it with a different program.

Thanks for all your hard work,
Rob.

Is anyone else having this problem?  If other people could try and test their Tivo with a recent MC build and let me know one way or the other.  Thanks!

Hi Rob,

Media Server will remove any playlist/folder that contains no content from the stuff it sends to the TiVo. This explains some of your problems at least. This functionality was accidentally disabled a while ago, and we fixed it recently.

About the crashing, I'll check more when I get in to work monday.

I understand that, so my Dinner folder with nothing in it, rightly went away.  But I have many smart lists that should be fine -- mp3 files in them that should play on Tivo.  Is there some other rule about what gets sent to Tivo?

Examples of lists that are NOT showing up are:

Smartlist: playlistid==883833631 [Genre]=[Alternative] ~t=360 ~sort=random [Rating]=>3

Smartlist:  playlistid==883833631 [Genre]=[Lounge],[Trance] ~t=240 ~sort=random

An example of one that IS working:

Smartlist: playlistid==883833631 [Genre]=[Eighties] ~t=60 ~sort=random

Is there a limit in the number of songs that can be in a Tivo playlist?

Yes, I think it's a problem with the number of songs. How many Alternative tracks do you have? And Lounge/Trance? Eighties?

I did a smart list with no rules (1000+ tracks) and it didn't show up on the TiVo, even if I used the limit modifier.

I'll talk to Matt about this tomorrow.

Try the MC9 forum for this one.

Eighties is small at 28 (not my favorite genre!) and Alternative is 600+ with no modifiers.  I think you are on to something!!!

I did some more testing.

When it is a stand alone list (i.e. not based on another playlist), it seems not to matter the length.

I have a list for all iPod music defined as:

-[Genre]=[Comedy],[Speech] [Media Type]=[Audio] -playlistid==54331500 -playlistid==869312499

and it results in 5209 songs.  That list DOES show up on the Tivo.

The ones where I base it on another list first seems to make it not work when the result set is too large. (200+?).

I hope this helps you debug and get to a solution, in the mean time at least I know I'm not crazy.  At least on this topic.

Thank you for your responsiveness, both in the forum and then in actually getting a fix implemented.  That is why I will continue to support you and your products.
