as i had the problem with meida jukebox i have tried with media center but it remains the same :
i would like to store and play files from cdrw and it is impossible !!
the first time all is ok :i insert the cd named "DISK1",scan it with "import media" and then can play any  files by clicking it in the media library :perfect .
BUT if i eject the cd and then try to do the same later it will be impossible :"the volume labeled "DISK1" was not found"and if i look under the CD,DVD,handhelds section i can see the reason why :the cd is known as "DISK(1)" so that i can play a stored file from a cd only in one session .
It is a shame with a enhanced software like this one !!!!!
i believe there must be a solution ....tell me please .

If you want to be able to play it without the disc actually being in the drive you will need to copy/rip the tracks to your hard drive.
Otherwise you WILL need the disc to be placed back into the CD drive to play it again.

Hmm.  I can see how that could be confusing.  

Media Center holds a list of music files and the locations where it can find each of those files.

You're importing from a data CD, and so Media Center only knows to find these files on that CD.  You need to copy the files to a directory on your hard drive, and then import into Media Center from that directory.  When you try to play that song, Media Center will look for the file on your hard drive and not on your CD.

i would like to play the files from the cd (cdrw udf formatted) and through Media center ...i don't understand the problem (for example winamp manage this very well) .
But it is not the first time i meet that kind of problem ,i think maybe that the sotware are made only for big hard disk computers and not for a cdrw storage .....
as for me i have only 20 go and having big applications i can not put all my music files on  the hard disk for the moment .
but i d like softwares to manage more smartly the cds devices ...

it worked fine for me playing off a CD with no copying to hard drive.

Put in CD
Import CD
Play CD
Remove CD
Put In CD
Search For CD In My List
Click On A File From The CD
CD Played

what do you mean by that ?
i of course can play the cd from the tree cd,dvd,handhelds by clicking on the compactdisc named "cdname (1)" but not from the library because in the library the files are knowm as being on "cdname" and not "cdname(1)".
so that the programm will have to do all the job (gathering informations) again and again with "cdname(1),(2),(3)....." although it is the same cd and the files are already known in the library....
but i m still hoping you will help me find the good way .

Search For CD In My List = Searched for the songs that is in the list that was on the cd.

they were in the media library file listing, and clicked on it just like any other file in the list.

Insert data disc for the first time, MC correctly identifies the volume label and catalogues it under [volume label]

Take disc out, re-insert it.

MC doesn't realise it's already got this disc in the catalogue and treats it as a second data disc labeled [volume label] and so adds it to the catalogue again, auto-naming it [volume label (1)] and so on every time the disc is inserted, but, it also reports the volume label as [volume label (x)] in the cd, dvd & handhelds tree node (the one on the tree root, not the one under advanced), effectively breaking the links to the files that were imported the first time. MC is looking for [volume label] (which is in the drive, but is showing as [volume label (x)].

This is definately a bug, last I heard, John T was working on it. I'm sure it'll get squashed pretty soon. just gotta be patient I guess.

(The only thing I'm not sure about here is MC's ability to read from udf formatted discs. I certainly get this with cdfs data discs though)

I am trying to use version 9..1 of media center (the free trial) .
I would like to say that i insist because i find the software very well done (for example the displaying of covers in the visualization ,etc ) .
now i wonder :who is john T (is it a english or american joke ?)?

Quick recap re. my previous post:

The problem I experienced was similar, but doesn't quite match audiofil's problem...

For me, I was trying out data dvd burning from within MC using dvd+rw discs. After the burn finished and all had been refreshed, the volume label was added to my cd\dvd catalogue. I wasn't entirely happy with the results, so I erased the disc and tried again. Even though I had removed [volume label] from my library, MC would not allow me to set the same volume label. Even though it was not in my library, MC would insist on appending (x) to the end.
I found all of this very hard going and gave up for a while. Maybe once I get v10 installed and working I'll enter the arena for another try.

I tried to replicate audiofil's problem here using the latest 9.1 build and an old data dvd (not mc burned) and can report that, like you king, it all worked as expected.

So, things audiofil needs to do to receive more help on this.....

1. Are you using the latest MC 9.1 build?
2. Have you tried using a standard cdfs written data cd (r or rw) as opposed to a udf, packet written disc?
3. open MC, click "help > system info" and paste that into your next post.

Personally, I'm leaning heavily towards the theory that there is either something amiss with the disc, causing MC to think it's a new one each time it sees it..

or

MC is having trouble with the udf format.

as for the cdf format i don t know how to have some ....in the help of Nero it is not mentionned ....neither on internet .What are the burning software handling it ?

an iso disc will be written using the cdfs file system.

The udf, or packet writing system is a method of formatting that allows you to treat a cd-rw like a huge floppy disc. Windows cannot natively read these cd's, you need software, such as Nero's InCD, to read/write from/to these discs. They are Ok-ish for backup purposes, but my personal experience is that they're more hassle than they are worth. I backup to another drive on a daily/weekly basis, and back up to dvd-rw monthly.

With regard to MC + udf formatted discs, I cannot offer you any more help, it's over to John T for that. Until then, the best option you have is simply not to use them.

A few points re. your system info....
v308 is the most recent stable build offered on the MC9 d'load page. It would be a long shot, but still might be worth trying the 9.1 build from the sticky thread @ the top of this forum. (build 9.1.316)
Seriously consider upgrading your operating system to XP.
if that's out the question, christmas is just around the corner, see if Santa can see his way to getting you some more RAM. Another 128 megs or so would massively improve your system performance.
