I recommended MJ to a friend. He says that when he imported a song, the artist tag information on all his songs was changed to the artist of the last import. Does this have anything to do with the program nor yet being registered? Any other reason? I told hime I didn't think it was MJ.

It isn't a known problem, but try updating MJ.

I recently encountered a smiliar problem...  I was using the trial version of Media Jukebox 8, and then Media Center 9 to tag all of my mp3s.  I reformatted my harddrive, and decided to purchase Media Jukebox 8.  However, after reimporting all of my mp3s, about half of the tags got screwed up - the Artist field got filled in with the info from the Album field.   This wouldn't be a big deal to me if I could redo the tags based on the file name (All the file names are in the Artist - Name format), but the program crashes on certain mp3s when I try to do so.  I imported the files into WMP, and it correctly identifies all of the tags.   Does anybody have some tips?

You may not have been storing the tags in the file, so what you saw when you re-imported were the tags inside the file (different).

Isolate the bad MP3 files or try to tag smaller batches of files.

Question 1:  Why can other programs see the correct tags if they weren't saved?

Question 2:  Why wouldn't the changes get saved?

It's not like I made a mistake tagging the files or anything... It took me 2 months to do it little by little, and then all of a sudden 4000 of them are messed up.

There are both ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags possible in the file.

In addition to those, MJ keeps the information in its own database.

is there a way i can get it to just read the tags instead of whats in its database then?  or maybe only view the id3v1 tags?

I too think there is something strange with the way the latest version of MJ is handling ID3 tags. Here is my experience.

I just downloaded iTunes from Apple. Upon importing my entire collection of MP3 files (managed by MediaJukebox), a large percentage of the files did not present their ID3 info. So, I decided to try to see what characteristics the files that did show up with their ID3 info intact had as opposed to those that didn't.

Experimentation showed that those MP3 files that had only an ID3v1 (MJ created) tag showed up fine in iTunes. Those files that had an ID3v2 tag (with or without an IDV1 tag) did not show up correctly.

Another experiment. Create an MP3 with iTunes, have iTunes create an ID3v2.4 tag, import it into MJ. End result, MJ doesn't recognize the tag.


So, here is my question. Who's program isn't handling the ID3v2 tags correctly?

Okay, that's cool. By the way, did one last experiment. Tell MJ to remove both tags. Then tell MJ to re-add both tags back to the file. Import into iTunes. Everything is cool. Hate that kind of stuff.

Currently, when someone refers generically to ID3v2 tags, they really mean ID3v2.3 ... which is the last v2 rev level to see major support.

FYI, according to the "Convert ID3 Tags" dialog in iTunes, they support ID3 versions 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4.
