Anyone know about the Dension DMP3 or NEO Car jukebox?
« on: December 12, 2003, 07:19:28 am »

I am looking to add MP3 capability to my boat.  I have posted questions on the ZEN and got the info I needed.  My search for other alternatives has lead me to the Dension DMP3 and DH201 head unit.
www.densionusa.com.
and
http://www.dension.com/index.dw?oldal=2&nyelv_id=2

The Dension unit is pricey for a complete setup, nice feature is you can use and IDE HD.

Further down the price scale is the NEO Car Jukebox
http://www.carsound.com/reviews/hd_units/neocarjuke.html
and
http://www.ssiamerica.com/products/neo35/

I am leaning towards the NEO at this point.  Price is attractive, about 400 bucks for an 80 Gb unit and I can use my existing head unit.  Wired remote comes with it which is an absolute must with a boat.

Any and all input welcome.  If you have other suggestions for HD based auto systems please post them.
Thanks,
Tim T.

I haven't used the Neo Car, but I've owned one of their Neo Jukebox portables for about 3 years. Audio quality is quite good. Build quality is good - components like the headphone jack, buttons, dial have a good feel to them and are durable. Software does not have every feature on earth, but that was a selling point to me. Simple and stable.

HW design is similar - it was made to be taken apart. If you want to swap HD, just grab a phillips-head and do it. It seems that the car units are their primary development focus right now, which is good if you're thinking of buying. So no bad reports from me.

Any reason your not condiering a normal MP3-CD head unit?  They are a lot cheaper.

As far as using a regular cd-disk based setup-
Cannot shuffle entire Genre or choose albums to shuffle unles you burned them that way.  The Hard Disc based systems do not have the full function of MC9/10 but you can shuffle entire Genre's, pick albums and load to a playlist, build playlist etc.  The open spec for the Neo units have broke the 137GB barrier so how may gig to you want to keep with you?  Burning, lableing storing CD just gets to be a pain.  With a couple buttons on the remote I can pick any album or artist I want and sort in any order.  The Neo has a tray to slide the HD into and just drag and drop the music library over, the directory structure then becomes your library structure.  If you library is Genre\Artist\Album that is how you navigate via the remote.

A mate of mine's got the Dension head unit and loves it. His one criticism is that it's quite sensitive to temperature. On a winter morning, he has to wait for the car to warm up before it will turn on.

I had a thing called a Neo35 installed in my car before I moved to Manhattan and didn't need a car anymore.

It looks like just about the same unit; I buoght one without a hard drive in it and installed my own 40gb drive.

The unit worked great, very happy with it.  Still have it in a box somewhere in case I ever get a car again.
