Connecting to MC Server
« on: December 23, 2003, 01:59:24 am »

Am I correct in understanding that, if I'm at my friend's house, she needs to have a registered copy of MC in order for me to connect to my MC library over her computer?

And if so:
- Is a Web-based version being considered?
- Would my friend need the same version (10) MC as I have?
- Can anyone recommend any good (and legal) programs which'd enable me to connect to my library remotely?  I'm aware of Mastermind... any others?

Thanks! :)

If you have a static IP address and run Remote Server you just need to enter:

http://myipaddress:portnumber/

and you can access your MC from anywhere.

Run remote server from Tools/Options/Startup

Oh my goodness, apparently there is a huge misunderstanding here, at least on my part.  And amusingly so!

I was hoping to be able to listen to my music while at work, or while at a friend's house, not just be able to see what's in my library.  If I wanted that, I'd just print it out and stick it in a folder :D.

So right now, kindly helping me test this, is my friend Bee in Singapore ('cause she's awake at this crazy hour).  Well, try to imagine my surprise when I gave her the link to my server (as specified above), and discovered that whenever she clicked on a link, *I* heard the song, not her.

I mean, maybe I'm just being dense here, but what good is this?*  Assuming I'm trying to use this as a remote jukebox while I'm at work, do I really want my music playing in my room at home?! :D

What am I missing here?

* I just realized that this could be, uh, useful as a blog game: "Pick Music and Surprise Me!" :D

I guess it was me who misunderstood.

Remote server is great for using MC from my iPAQ for instance.

You'd need one hell of an amp to hear it in Singapore!

Hmm.  Yeah, now I'm really confused.

Because in the MC docs, it talks about the Media Server and SHARING music.  Not remote controlling it ;-).

So I guess there are two different programs tied in with MC?

(incidentally, I'm testing out a different server thingy:  just for fun, let me know if this URL streams a big band jazz song for you in Windows Media Audio :))

Edited to add: I deleted the URL above because I already learned that my 'different server thingy' does work :)

I guess the City Rythym Orchestra would stream but not through Mozilla Firebird.

There is Remote Server which allows you to control MC from another location.  You'll find this under Tools -> Options -> Startup -> Action Tab -> Run Remote Server on Port <value>

There is also Media Server that will stream to other MC engines as well as providing TiVo Home Media Option.  You'll find this under Tools -> Advanced Tools -> Media Server.  This sounds like what you're looking for: MC is the server and either MC or TiVo HMO is the client.

Ah ha!  Now it's starting to make sense.

And then am I correct in understanding that, in order for me to LISTEN to my music away from home, I need to have MC installed on that remote computer (e.g., at work)?

JimH, does it need to be a registered/paid copy for friends/family only wanting to stream -i.e. no local MC library?

ThatAdamGuy,  what server thingy software did you successfully use before Media Server?

JimH - exactly the same version or just MC9/MC10 version?  If I have 10.0.x running at home and 10.0.y running at work, will they connect?

I'm currently using Fotki's "Personal Server" -- free for those who have Fotki yearly memberships.  Fotki is primarily site for sharing photos, but as of late they've been adding other features.

Same version, exactly.  It might not matter what the build is, but you can't count on it.
