Med Svr line speed requirements?
« on: December 24, 2003, 01:54:40 pm »

Okay, after tons of trial and error, I finally am able to access my music from work. That's great. However, it doesn't work very well. I'm not sure what speed I have on my DSL at home, but I'm sure that must be where the problem lies.

For those of you for whom this is working -- that is, you can play music smoothly without breaks on a remote computer with your home computer being the server, what speed line do you have?

Thanks.

What bitrate are the files you're trying to play?

You can make a second library, import all your tracks and convert them to a lower bitrate for this purpose.  (Don't delete the originals.  Try a few before you do a lot.)  Then share this library in Media Server.

I ripped them at VBR, but I'd say they are mostly between 180 and 250 or so.

If I did them at, say, 96 do you think that would make enough of a difference? Would they still sound decent?

If I remember right (and it's very possible I don't), a 196 ripping
is a full DSL line outbound, so if there is any other traffic, and there's always other traffic, it's too much. Try 128 (try a few, listen to
them at work and see if they work better).

Then you need an upload speed of 180-250kbs.

The encoding rate at what you rip your music is what gets broadcast.

If ur DSL is 128 up  then you you will need to convert your high quality rips to 128. That could be 128 CBR ( nice & easy) or make sure your VBR top rate does not exceed 128.

It would be quite cool if MC could re-encode the stream in real-time to any desired rate, this way no manual re-encoding would be reqd.
