Hi there,

Someone posted about www.digitallyimported.com in another thread, and I'm impressed! So many high quality streams (without ads) and for free!

So this got me to thinking: I've just ripped almost 6,000 tracks from my own CDs, I subscribe to both Napster and MusicMatch radio, and I already have no life, so why not add to the mess?

Tell me about your personal favorite Internet radio sites, and a little bit about each one.

Sure, I could just look in a directory for this, but I'm interested in personal recommendations here

Some sites / services I know about:

- MusicMatch:
I'm paying a (discounted price, I think) of $30 a year for this, and I've found MM's radio service to be absolutely outstanding. With a newly improved interface, accessing and customizing radio stations is easy. The only bummer: I can't listen to them from within MC

. Wonderful genre and sub-genre groupings, though, and no ads! And paying members can skip songs they don't like. By far, though, the best feature is being able to have MusicMatch analyze your playing history and/or library files and create custom station mixes for you, or let you specify a group of artists and make a custom station around their music. So cool and addicting!

- Spinner.com (now Radio@Netscape):
Stupid name, but quite a few cool stations as I recall (I haven't accessed this lately). Downsides: ads, must use specialized player, can't skip songs.

- Accuradio.com
Songs load fast. You can skip ones you don't like. You can tell it not to play songs by certain artists. I'm not impressed with the sound quality, though, and the house audio ads are annoying.

- Live365.com
I haven't used this in a while, but as a non-paying user, I got increasingly annoyed by the popups, listening restrictions, audio ads and hit-or-miss quality of stations

Note that I'm not really interested in individual stations, but rather, aggregations of stations... either very thoughtfully-assembled guides, or services like the ones above (paid or free).

I have only 2 internet radio favorites . . .

www.RadioParadise.com - 'ecclectic, intelligent rock'

www.BellyUp4Blues.com - 'the only a$$-kicking blues rocker'

Between these two I have not looked for other stations in a l-o-n-g time . . . I even chose them over my music collection alot of the time (especially Radio Paradise as their programming is great so I let them make my playlists).

Happy Holidays to you all. Radioparadise.com is also my fave. Good people who run it, great playlists, and high quality streams. Nice site that has a history of the playlist, links to all music guide and active user forums.

LOL! I did check out RadioParadise, and it's an interesting mix, I must admit, and amusingly it seems like a bit of a cult-like community, judging from the massive amount of postings. I'd say that those people clearly have no life, but then I look at my own recent history in the MC forums and on my favorite swing dance board, and I realize that there, but for the grace of God, go I ;-)

Yes, it's a strange, though memorable name. Apparently it comes from the lyrics of an old swing song, though I can't remember which one.

Rhapsody is best for me. You can build your own artist/genre base if you have a subscription but if you don't, you can skip songs if you don't want the one that's playing.

I have just started experimenting with http://www.icebergradio.com
They have a lot of genre choices. It seems to be free and has 128k streams.

I still look in on Live 365 occasionally.

Yes, I forgot about Rhapsody... excellent programming, and I enjoyed the ability to skip over songs I didn't like.

I just tried out Icebergradio. Nice selection, but try as I might (and even after setting my profile for DSL), all I could get were 34kbps streams. They sounded okay, but not great.

Maybe I'm confused about the streaming rate. It wouldn't be the first time. I'll check again as soon as BellyUpForBlues gets boring. It hasn't yet.

Rap[hody is Windows 9 128 kps ,and it sounds very good.
I got a 2 weeks free trial to MusicMatch plus radio.
It was quite good-And cheap if you subscribe.
If working outside in an office i may take MusicMatch radio .
$2.95 a month Gold
$ 4.95 a month Platinium

Zevele, I subscribe to both MusicMatch Radio (Gold) and Napster Premium, and I couldn't be more thrilled. Both services have their quirks, but they're worth every penny I pay for them. When I realize that I pay about $12.50 for both combined each month, vs. $42 or so for my danged cell phone, it's a hell of a deal in terms of enjoyment / usefulness

And hey, on a separate note, I finally (after many many hours of learning and futzing) have my own radio station up for both broadband and dialup users.

I encourage you to check out my SmileRadio (currently featuring a cappella music) and let me know what you think (either about the tunes or -- more importantly -- about how the sound quality is and whether I can make things more clear on my Web page

I'll check it out after I finish listening to the 9/5/99 Strawberry Mountain Festival, Yosemite CA. Bluegrass Sessions featuring Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas,Sam Bush, Mark Schatz, Brian Sutton, and Gabe Witcheer on www.nugs.net I can't tell what the listening bitrate is but some concerts can be downloaded in FLAC which is lossless and converted by dBPowerAMP to any format you want including WAV 24 bit, 96k, 6 channel.
Live shows are traditionally free so copyright violations are not an issue. You can always choose to listen-only to any of the shows if you're still not sure.
dBPowerAMP Converter is also free and beats EAC in my opinion. It still doesn't beat MC10's ripper for versatility except for the above encoding options.

The other day I saw a Napster card for sale in Kroger. I suppose it works like a long distance phone card. Strange world.

Sounds great. Windows Media Player didn't work but standard broadband works fine.

Also make the "Playing Now" show up wherever you are in your site. I am reading jokes but I have to leave to see who I'm listening to.

Well, after what I just learned, it may all be pretty shortlived.

Apparently, even if I stream minor-label stuff to myself and one friend for a few hours a month, I still must pay many HUNDREDS of dollars to the RIAA and related organizations in fees. Because apparently broadcast over the Internet isn't really broadcasting... oh no, it's considered PUBLISHING, as if I had pressed CDs and handed it copies on a street corner.

To top it off, none of that money will be distributed to the lesser-known bands I'm playing, since it's handed over based upon pure billboard chart rankings. Charming.

So in order to support college a cappella groups with a hobbyist Internet radio stream, I'll have to fund the horribly poor Britney Spears and her ilk.

I think I'm going to go find a puke bucket now. Or just cry. Or both.

I just hope that everyone associated with the RIAA got huge (and smelly) lumps of coal in their Christmas stockings. And maybe really bad indigestion, too.

Hi All,

I listen to KEXP (kexp.org) most of the time. They also have an excellent reggae show on Saturday 9am & a Blues show Sunday 9am (Pacific Time, convenienly that's tea time UK, after the footie & before i go out).
