Skins, JRiver site & Digital Certificates
« on: January 03, 2004, 12:20:05 pm »

Hi,

1st post so go easy...

Just bought Media Center 10 (10.0.27), tried to d/load some alternate skins on the JRiver homepage by clicking on the download link & my browser asks me to specify which Digital certificate I want to use with the site. As I don't have a digital ID I can only click cancel & I get a 'forbidden' error message.

This happens with some but not all skins (pixtudio 'Attacker' does this, as does Genesis's 'Pioneer Supertuner III')

Is this a security feature to allow only registered users to d/load skins/plugins etc, if so, where can I get a Digital ID for this? I can supply my purchase details if needs be?

Not sure if this is a MC10 build problem or a specific to me problem so I'll post in the 10.0.27 thread as well, admins feel free to delete whichever is not relevant.

Oh & I've tried both Mozilla Firebird 0.7 & IE 6 - they both ask for a certificate...
Thanks!

I just tried and got no such thing.

there is an option you can turn off in IE under Tools, Internet Options, Advanced Tab and in there there is some certificate options.

there is some other security options in there you can check.

Thanks for the prompt response..

I have checked & tried variations in the security options in both Firebird & IE (they were at default anyway), sadly no joy...the certificates are still being asked for.

Besides, I'm thinking that if this is happening across both browsers plus I get the EXACT same 'Client Authentication' window using either browser suggests that it's the remote site, that & the message 'the website that you want to view requests authentication' in said window (of course windows could be lying through it's teeth - wouldn't be the first time!) However I have had no other problem with any other webpages, secure or otherwise, which leads me to believe it's some sort of external problem...

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong  :)

Oh, just in case this helps...(long shot I know...)

I have seen that before On FTP Problems Normaly Due To International Chrs

Here is A Sample on how plug-ins and skins install

(this is an encoder) Right Click On This

http://accessories.musicex.com/mediacenter/mc_data/plugins/enc_mpc.mjp

this was a right click on a "DownLoad" link on the encoder and skins have a link also

Save It To Disk Like C:\enc_mpc.mjp

Open It in A Text Editor

========== This Is The File ================
[Package]
Name=MP3 Encoder
Action=UNZIPDIR
Version=2.0.51
URL=http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/mj_data/plugins/enc_mp3.zip

[Action]
File1=*.*
File1Action1=COPY_PLUGINDIR
File2=enc_mp3.dll
File2Action1=REGISTER
=============== File Above =================

Download The File From The

URL http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/mj_data/plugins/enc_mp3.zip

Save It To Your Drive To Like C:\enc_mp3.zip

Go Back And Edit Above File And Edit the URL

========== This Is The File ================
[Package]
Name=MP3 Encoder
Action=UNZIPDIR
Version=2.0.51
URL=C:\enc_mp3.zip

[Action]
File1=*.*
File1Action1=COPY_PLUGINDIR
File2=enc_mp3.dll
File2Action1=REGISTER
=============== File Above =================

Save This File Then Dbl Click On It It Should Install From Your Local Drive.

see if this may help, not sure if ir will. but may tell you more where the problem may be.

OK that gets around the problem, but doesn't explain it,

If I click 'cancel' at the screenshot posted above I get error:

Failed to connect to a server
Reason: Forbidden
URL: http://accessories.musicex.com/mediajukebox/mj_data/miniskins/attacker_wa.zip

Looks like the 'left-click' on the link, which then activates the '.mjb' file handler is OK, it's when the '.mjb' file handler tries to get the .zip file from the server that the certification kicks in for certain files...

Like I said before it looks like the certification is browser-independant & windows generated, considering I get the exact same screen with both FB & IE of course, I'm no web guru, so I canna be sure!

However I would say that it's gonna be slightly tedious doing this for every plugin/skin/whatever that I want, BUT if the JRiver boys could have a look at those 2 skins' links & see what the difference is between them & say S Haggard's 'Birthstones' skin or Zrockers 'Lower right' skin which install fine, it may help pinpoint the problem? (these are all mini-me skins btw)

Thanks again for your help King Sparta BTW...

Maybe when "Bob" comes back to work.

Gateley might be able to shed some light on this also since he is a net Guru kind of guy.

it may be the version of windows, default language or settings

but i do know when non standard chrs are sent to the FTP Control in a VB 6 project and used by a user this is the same pop up.
