In response to your original question:
To backup your library manually I'm pretty sure you just need to copy out your "Program Files/JRiver/Media Center/Data" directory, and copy it back once you have installed a fresh copy.
To access your registration information, go to https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi and enter the email address that you used to register MC. An email will be sent to you with your registration code.

Can someone confirm that the Data directory is all he needs to salvage?

The Data directory should take care of all the files, view schemes, and play/smartlists. As for toolbars, fonts, sorting, favorites..that's all done via the registry. Personally, I think each Library should have it's own set of sorting, favorites, etc. as these are lost when switching libraries, moving things around. It's been a bug for the longest time. That's the main reason I only have 1 library to worry about (and other things). As for registration (I think he was referring to that too), he should be ok if he saves his reg code for both 9 and 10. That's all I know on this subject as I rarely backup anything.

With regard to the registry settings, would it be safe or advisable to save the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver" key as a reg file and import it after installing a new version? It seems like the HKLM key is version specific and might not be helpful.

Chasoscar, the registry key phelt refers to needs to be exported, then backed up, and then finally, imported into your new installation.

If you have already used your ghost image, then it may be too late for that, but making a backup of your media center "data" folder will keep your library, your tree customisations, your playlists and your offline CD library.

My advice is to forget the registry. Back up your data folder and then uninstal media center, then delete your media center directory. After that, re-install media center and copy the backed up data folder into its rightful place.

It might be an idea to play around with a fresh "test" library beforehand, just to make sure everything's working as expected. If something is broke, it's nice to able to say for certain that it's got nothing to do with the backed up "data" folder.

You may need to write off the registry settings and start from scratch because your ghost image could well contain invalid/redundant MC registry stuff if MC was installed before the image was taken, and if MC was not installed before the imaging, then most certainly things will not work as expected. Either way, unless you get a clean MC install done, this scenario will skew subsequent bug posts/calls for help that you make.

All of a sudden I feel like a kid at Christmas.

I might still have some problems with the 1.7 gig upload wall that I was hitting with my iPod but I got to get MC working first........ maybe that will fix that problem.

btw........ the ghost image was my system partition only, jriver is on a completely different partition/drive

Just one more thing~

One of my main concerns is saving my ratings cause I only have a 10gig iPod and a 30gig Library. I usually just load my top rated tunes. Is that setting included in the Data folder?

The registry is stored in the system drive, so restoring that would have overwritten the old registry.

As for the ratings, not sure... I'm pretty sure they are in the Data directory, but I'm sure someone will confirm that soon.

Yep, the ratings for your files are saved in the library itself (the mediafiles.jmd) file in your library directory.
If you did what Marko suggested: 1/(lib backup first 2/uninstall/ghost 3/reinstall 4/restore lib you should be Ok with you ratings.

Okay...... things are beginning to make sense. I think what happened with my lisense fiasco was....

I updated to ver10 registered, started having some problems with IE6(not MC) and reverted to a system ghost image made a couple of weeks earlier that had ver9 registry entries even tho I was still using the version 10 that resided on a different(program)partition. Does that make sense? That would cause problems with my lisensing wouldnt it?

Now what to fix it? Just backup the Data folder/uninstall/reinstall/restore/replace Data folder?


Should that do it? If it does then I need to work out the iPod problem.

yup.
When uninstalling, choose to have the registry cleeaned too. You will lose things like custom presets in dialogues such as rename from properties, toolbar customisations, and I'm also pretty sure you'll lose any "sorting" you have saved.

Your data folder will have your library, and most things pertaining to it (album art, thumbnails etc.) but all your options will be reset to default settings.

Tip:
This is why I don't bother installing programs on a different partition to windows. They are so closely tied to the registry, that in this context, they almost become part of the OS.
Next time you're carving up your drives, make the system drive bigger and format it. Install windows and get all your hardware drivers etc. installed and running fine. Configure your hardware the way you like it. Do the same for windows, and hit windows update to get your installation up-to-date.
Next, install and configure your most favourite/essential software and finally, defrag the drive.
When all that's done, then make your ghost image. You will then have a clean, reasonably up-to-date windows installation, configured the way you like it, with your essential apps pre-installed and configured.
That is a lot of time saved into a ghost image that'll take around 15 minutes to run.

Next, work out a strategy that keeps data backed up on your other drives. track down software such as second copy 2000 or backup plus. I use the first of those to do daily backups of MC's data folder and my "My Documents" folder amongst others. This gives me copys of the data/config files of most used programs/games that are easy to implement to bring the ghost image bang up-to-date after applying it.
