RealPlayer 10 with Music Store
« on: January 07, 2004, 02:04:34 am »

As I write this, I am listening to Night Ranger's "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" on my Zire 71.  It is a 192Kbps DRM-enabled AAC file!   RealPlayer 10 was released today, and it features a music store.  Tracks are 99 cents, or $9.95 per album.  All files are RealAudio 10 (192Kbps AAC), so the sound quality is very good.  Persons who have signed up for a Music Store account can get version 1.5 of RealPlayer for PalmOS.  It does not have any new features, but does have a new name, new logo and of course, supports the AAC files purchased from the music store. :-)

This may be true, but you failed to mention that the downloaded .rax file (what you get when you purchase a track) is only playable inside RealPlayer (if listening on a PC anyway).

Also, how do you know it's AAC?  I'm not doubting you; I just can't find any mention of AAC on their site.  Could you provide a specific link?

A simple link would have sufficed ;), but thanks!.  What I was actually looking for was this.

I do find it curious that they aren't hyping the AAC thing more than they are, like on their home page for instance.

Anyway, given that this is a proprietary format (or container if you want to be technical), one which necessitates (or at least promotes) the exclusive use of RealPlayer, I wonder if you are violating some ToS agreement by posting this. <big grin>

<I'm off to the MC forum to ask about support...>

I'd be happy with RA10 support on my iRiver iHP-120.  Isn't the codec semi-open-source?
