Buying An IPOD, 10,20,40 Gigs
« on: January 06, 2004, 11:54:43 am »

I notice that there is a display dif between the two models

since Best Buy is sold out of the 10Gigs and i prob will get that one.

just wondering if anyone has looked at both of them and was wondering about the display. Is it easyer to view, What one was better, did one have more options?

the first one a 10gig IPOD looks like on the menu it has more options.

They're all the same.  You can customize what shows on the main menu.  They're just set up differently.

There are rumors that Apple is about to introduce a cheaper iPod.  Probably at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) this weekend in Las Vegas.  $200?

Steve just announced that the 10 gig is going to 15 for the same price and he introduced the ipod mini.  Four gigs for $249, sounds like it will be flash based or something similar.

Not sure about the screen but the interface is supposed to be the same.

The "mini" just announced @ $249.  Same size as a credit card, 1/2" thick!

There was no room for the 4 buttons, so they've been incorporated into the scroll wheel (now dual purpose).

Interesting.

Also, 15GB replace 10GB for the *SAME* $299 price....

What makes the Ipod better then the other's?

And please, no one say it's because it's in a 50cent video..

Darn, the 15GB will only be $300?  I feel like such a fool for paying $350 for my 60GB Zen Xtra.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

Maybe thats why they are sold out.

If the below is true i think that may be better for me than the hard drive based IPOD, And I don't really need 10 gigs.

What to do, What to do.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - When Apple Computer Inc. chief executive Steve Jobs takes the stage at MacWorld next month, analysts expect him to unveil smaller, cheaper iPods and hope he will detail the company's strategy to move into the digital living room.

The lower-end iPods, which are expected to carry a price tag of about $100 and will hold 400 to 800 songs, are a necessary answer to the bevy of MP3 digital music players now on the market that cost $100 or less, analysts said.

"Odds are it's a flash-memory-based player, something to position Apple against the low-cost offerings from Creative and Rio," said Rob Enderle, principal of market search firm the Enderle Group.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment on its plans for MacWorld, traditionally a forum for the company to unveil its plans for new products.

I'm waiting for the 80gig iPod.  Then I can carry all my music around with me.  Heaven! :)

All MP3 players are not equal, at least IMHO.

The 20g is nice because, for the $100 increase in price, you get:

10 more GB
the dock connector (has a nice lineout)
a wired remote control

I figure that it's well worth the $100

As for the mini-iPod, I've heard rumors around $100 for 2G.. but who knows...

Ahh... found a link:

25 min skip protection?

sounds like a hard drive.

for the price i se no atvantage for the Mini unless thats the Retail price and the real sale price will be much lower like $199

Here's an article on the announcement:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=738&e=1&u=/nm/20040106/tc_nm/apple_dc

It has a picture of the new iPod.

KingSparta: At this time, there won't be any $100 or less Ipod. Steve Jobs in his keynote address today stated basically that he didn't want to compete with other companies for the sock drawer, he was more interested in the "high-end" flash market.

The "big" decision (assuming you've already made the decision to go with Ipod) is whether you want to pay $250 for 4GB storage, or an extra $49 for 11GB more. It is amazing how quickly (not literally) you can fill up a 4GB Ipod and it isn't like a computer where you can snap in a couple more RAM chips, you've got to start from scratch or lower your expectations when you hit the limits of your purchase.

Don't know what other needs you have, if all of your pockets are the size of a business card and you can only lift 3.6 oz or less than a mini Ipod is for you, otherwise, seems like the better value is the HD version (though the batter might not last as long) :)

Jon

Someone asked why Ipod? Here is my 50cents worth:

Interface, interface, design...

Price, not so much, but I'm willing to pay for good work and the interface saves time and aggravation which is worth a lot to me.

Another consideration between the mini and the 15g ipod is the fact that the bigger ones have a drive and may be more fragile.

I don't have an ipod, I use aeroplayer on my palm zire 71, so I don't claim any expertise, but in theory the flash version should be a little less sensitive to getting knocked around.

May not mean much to everyone, but it's important to note that it is not just 11 more gigs for 50 dollars extra.

The "big" decision

well been doing some reading after all of that I am Thinking the Mini is not the way to go.

I think I may wait for the 15gigs (more bang for the buck) I think I will also buy the docking bay.

But if Steve Jobs thinks he is going to get me to buy an "Apple" he is dreaming.

If you're thinking of buying a 15gig and buying a dock you should probably consider a 20g which includes the dock and the remote for just a bit more. I'm drooling and waiting to buy one at the moment and so far that 20gig model looks like the best bang for the buck.

I've got the first generation 5gig model and for various reasons, I'm going to be "updating" to the 20 gig too, better value for me (I want the dock also, bigtime!). I was waiting around to see what announcements would be made today. I don't want to wait until their next round of updates which will probably be another 4-6 months away. I'll miss the mechanical wheel, but i'm sure the solid state one will be more rugged, not that i've had a problem with the mechanical one.

KS- Thanks to the great integration between MC and Ipod, you won't need to get an Apple, though for only a few hundred dollars more you could get an Ipod with a 17" monitor, 80 Gigs of space, 1Ghz cpu...

I don't own an iPod, I don't know anyone who does, and I'm not anti-Apple, but I was looking around for information on iPod's, seeing as I was considering purchasing one, and came across this:

www.ipodsdirtysecret.com

Download and watch the movie. You'll either laugh it off or take it seriously. There's been a bit of discussion about this problem lately.

Scott.

Either way, it is a funny movie.

A golden battery that only lasts 18 months.

More reading around revealed that since the video went public Apple have begun offering a $99 battery replacement service. I'd still be pretty annoyed if I had to pay another $99 every 18 months. Still, it's better than $250.

Scott.

well went to best buy today.

No IPODS, Sold Out.

As a matter of fact nothing else there had more than 256megs of storage.

I did see the 256IRiver, and was looking at it's bigger brother (20 gig) on the internet.

But i did buy A (Atrac3 Plus & MP3 Compatable) Sony Walkman Model D-NF610 Like $90 That Has An FM/AM Radio, Gets TV Stations Too, And Weather.

Been tossing it around into the air seems to work well without skiping
