Salute to Turkey

For those who live in places where football is a different game, tomorrow is a holiday here in the U.S.  It's Thanksgiving, a day we act like we're grateful to the Pilgrims and the others who settled this great place we call the United States of America.

Tomorrow, 285,000,000 people will eat around 100,000,000 turkeys, along with mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries, stuffing (don't ask), sweet potatoes, peas and onions, relish (don't ask), and enough apple pie and ice cream to fill Yankee Stadium.  Then they will push back from the table, talk about taking a walk and decide it's too much work on a full stomach.

We're darn lucky.  We know that.  Tomorrow we say "Thanks" (burp).

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!  8)

The relish tray was the first thing that the women in the old house in Fairbury, Nebraska would put out, so I remember it at eye-level on the dining room table.

It was on a round glass tray with lots of jagged edges, filled with a lot of stuff we weren't supposed to eat YET.



Ours had carrots and celery and what I remember best was getting my fingers slapped.  "You just wait."

well the pic above looks good all but the sweet pickles (I can't stand them) maybe in tater sause on my fish i had yesterday it would be ok.

Glad to see the party list, but brocolli and caulliflower?  Those are vegetables in North Carolina?   ;D

Yea well Me and sue eat brocolli, caulliflower and asparagus allot and i guess she asked them and they said "brocolli and caulliflower" so i guess thats it.

I think normaly I would pick Corn but trying to get sue to eat corn is to hard for me to do. I think she is getting stronger as she gets older, and to force feed her at her age just don't sound right she is almost 56 going on 29.

Somewhat on this subject. How did you prepare your bird?

I started last night about 8:00 pm or so. Lit an entire bag (20lb) of charcoal in the grill. This particular one has a firebox on the side. Once the charcoal was ready I threw a healthy portion of mesquite on for some wonderful smoke flavor. It was cold enough here lastnight to just leave the birds on over night. Next step, break out the deep fryer and give them a good dunking for about half an hour or so.

Makes for a very moist and flavorful turkey. I think we all had to loosen the belts a notch or two.

Don't forget travel!  For many people Thanksigiving means driving hundreds of miles to visit family and eating with large groups of people, we only had 15 (including a German and a Brit .)

Stuffing
Gravy
Brussel Sprouts (hey I LOVE them) :o
Carrots
Onions
Green Bean Cassarole

Pumpkin Pie
Apple Pie
Ice Cream

I suspect we all have much to be thankful for.  (Not forgetting a mostly stable version of MC9 with iPod plug-in.)

I may give you a big laugh...but...

you mean you deep fry a whole turkey?

Yes. The deep fryers are available everywhere now. You do it outside over a single large burner (propane) that sounds like a jet engine. Drop dodo in, about six or seven minutes per pound. Turns out very good.

I talked to my pest control manager this morning thats how he cooked his he cooked it at 3mins 15seconds per LB and it was cooked. the book called for 3 mins per LB

Sue (My Wife) baked ours she also injected it with 2 cups of broth before cooking we also stuffed the bird.

Everything was good.

We also heard of 2 families that could not aford a thanksgiving dinner so we bought them both A turkey,  stuffing, potatoes and a few other things.

They were really happy and it made me and sue feel good helping someone out who is down on luck. we had to cook one of the turkeys because they don't have money for gas for the stove.

They both are being helped by the community.

Something i really would like to taste.
If you do not mind to tell me how you smoke the little bird exatly ,it is something i want to try .
NOT in my flat !
But in a kibboutz where i have friends .
They can get gear from the kitchen.

By the way ,i did not forget you -yes i know it looks like i do-.

I cannot burn ,as i cannot do a lot of things .
I do think i found -with help of cause- the problem.
Not sure to be able to explain . Kind of motherboadr not compatible with ATA and a card [?] missing to make thing running as they have to run.

I will fix all of it soon and get Atlon 1800 or 2000 on the way.

Are you still on phone 56 kps connection ?
If yes do you have a line only for it =can you download other night or day?

Here first  big bad weather since early morning.
First time need for a pullover and some heating in the house..is good!

The to be new house is in town ? Or still in he country side?

Since yesterday ,i enjoy MV9 ...killing program really !

Nobody's mentioned the deviled eggs and watergate salad yet.  A staple at every thanksgiving I can remember (back home, that is), my mom made some very bodacious deviled eggs.

For those that have never experienced them:  she'd hard-boil some eggs, peel 'em, cut 'em in half and separate the yolks.  All of the yolks then got mashed in a bowl with mustard, paprika, and other stuff.  Then you take that mixture and fill up the holes in the hard-boiled egg whites.  Served cold, they're delicious!  (Though they always felt kind of clammy when you picked them up to eat them).

Watergate salad?  That's any fruit salad, mixed with whipped cream and tiny marshmallows... light on the fruit ;)  Ours was always green for some reason.  The best part (for a kid, anyway) is they served it with the main course, not as a dessert!  Sweet!  

And let's not forget my Nana's cranberry Jell-OTM - molded in a flat sheet-cake with a layer of crushed pecans on the bottom, sometimes with little chunks of pineapple suspended in it.

Now Drinking Chardonnay (wife likes it, i prefer something Semi-Sweet)

Jim I take it all Chardonnay is not the same can you recomend a Chardonnay you normaly drink? i would like to try it. this one is from Sutter Home. the reason i ask is you were drinking it the other day and i never had any (I normaly stick to red).

The Chardonnay I bought tonight is from Bonterra Vineyards.  It's owned by Fetzer who grows organically in Sonoma and Mendocino counties in California, north of San Francisco, north of Napa county.  I think it was $13.  I had a tour once of the Fetzer vineyard and I like their wine.  I've never had a bottle of theirs I didn't.

I prefer Sancerre or Sauvignon Blanc but they are a little less sweet.

One of the many reasons I like France is that, in any grocery store, you can buy a really nice bottle for about 1/2 the price we pay in the U.S.  Seems like a kindly attitude toward the pensioners.
