mc loaded on portable usb drive
« on: January 31, 2004, 07:17:54 am »

I would like to down load MC but only have a 9 gig hard drive that is pretty full. Would it work loaded on my portable 80 gig usb hard drive. (not real computer literate)

It should work on the machine it's installed to. In other words, you hook up the drive to a machine, install MC to that drive, and it works with that machine. But I don't think you could then hook the drive to another machine and start using MC - the new machine would not have all the settings, install info, etc.

If your portable drive is connected with USB2, I can't forsee any major issue. If it's connected with regular USB (much, much slower) it probably would not be pleasant.

It should work.  However, it may be a tad slow on a USB drive.

MC isn't that big. You could install the program on your 9GB drive and keep the library, music, etc. on the USB drive.

I know I could put mc on my regular hard drive but I have MJ8 on it  and may not want to keep mc until I get a more powerful computer. Also though it might work smoother on a drive with plenty of room. It is a Maxtor usb2 drive and I do have a usb 2 card installed.

I'm not sure you can have both versions installed at the same time even if they're in different directories.  A few of the files get installed in the system folders and the registry entries will conflict.

Make sure you have a good backup of your MJ8 library.   MC9 and 10 will upgrade the library and there's no going back.

Remy,
You're correct about having multiple versions installed, but you could go back to MJ8 by re-importing.

Thanks for the help. I may just stay with mj8 until I get a new computer.
