I thought I read something on one of these sites where XP unfortunatley defaults the USB version to 1.1 instead of 2.0 with XP.  I thought I had USB 2.0 but I'm now getting a message which states a high-speed USB device is plugged a into non-high-speed device.  Has anyone heard of this problem and/or know how to remedy it?  Help greatly appreciated.  E-mail address is available for direct reply.  Thanks!!!

the orginal Windows Xp did not have support or had broken support for USB 2.0

Windows Xp Sp1 should have fixed this, if you do not have SP1 installed then you should

not sure if this is your broblem but maybe it is.

Be sure that the USB port into which the device is plugged is USB 2 capable, ie. perhaps not all of your motherboard 's USB ports are USB 2 capable. Same goes for any kind of USB hub - USB ports on monitors, keyboards, or standalone hubs are less likely to be USB 2 compatible.

My motherboard has USB 2 capable ports directly attached and accessible from the rear of the machine, and two sets of headers for connecting extra backplates with USB ports to the rear or front mounts of your case.

One of these extra USB headers is USB2, the other appears to be only USB1.1.

I get the message referring to plugging in a USB 2 device into a low speed USB port as well, when I plug in to my front mounted USB ports. I definately have XP SP1, and all the latest patches etc, installed

I have 6 USB ports, 2 are USB1 4 Are USB2

I think the Keyboad and the mouse are the USB1 ports.

My Gigabyte motherboard is 2 years old.

New motherboards that came out around that time (late 01 & early 02) had a mixture of USB 1.1 & 2.0.

Mine has 6 USB ports... all are 2.0.

But NOTE: ?

Only 2 of them were 2.0 right out of the box.  The other 4 were 1.1 UNLESS I installed the Gigabyte USB drivers (from the included CD) that made the other 4 also USB 2.0.

But, the story does not end there.  As KingSparta mentioned, I still did not have access to the other 4 USB 2.0 ports (as 2.0) in Win XP untill I installed Win XP SP1.  That turned them on for Win XP.

So, when is USB 2.0 really 2.0 ?

One of the other things is My MP3 player was USB1 and i also had to install a driver in the player for it to work with USB2

About 6 months ago, I added a USB 2.0 card to my 533Mhz, Win98SE machine. It added 5 USB 2.0 ports. The cost was around $25.
A USB 2.0 hub might cost slightly more. A USB 1.1 hub would be significantly less. The point is if you have one of each, you can easily and cheaply have more of each.
Then there's Firewire...
