I'm migrating all of my music files from my main MC box to an external server. The server will be either running Win2k or Linux (I haven't decided yet).

Coming from a Macintosh background, I'm wondering which method of connecting will give me better performance:

1) Map the shared directory from the server to the client (eg. actually assign it a drive letter)

2) Use the UNC path name to the server for all the files.

Anyone have input into the loopholes of Windows networking? Are there better ways to go about it?

Performance differences?..probably none.

They both work equally well (mapped is simply a drive letter representation of the UNC path). You can save some MC library space by using mapped dir's. For instance...

UNC => \\stevo\s\ogg\Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies - 05 - Whale & Wasp.ogg

VS

Mapped (where s: = \\stevo\s\ogg) => s:\Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies - 05 - Whale & Wasp.ogg

At one time, I thought UNC was more flexible than mapped (as far as future drive expansion, portability <so as to not break the path in the MC library>, and housekeeping were concerned)...but now the reasoning escapes me.

edit: You can actually set up a UNC share on the server that to the client is as condensed, and since you have total control of each machine...

I store my Library on a Linux Box at the office in ape format.  I cannot listen to that library from home via secure VPN connection (files too large to stream).  Other than that, it works great.

I also use a mapped drive.

With your responses & poking around on the Microsoft website I think I'll be comfortable with just mapping the shared folders.

Shorter paths do seem to be better!
