Media Center 10 Licence Agreement
« on: February 12, 2004, 09:04:31 pm »

For some reason, I decided to actually read the licence agreement that we all blindly agree to every time we install Media Center. Upon reading it, I was a little confused, and not just because of all the legal jargon :)
It's been my understanding that we are allowed to use our Media Center licence on as many computers as we want as long as we own them, but here's a quote from the Media Center 10 licence agreement:
Quote
J. RIVER grants you the right to use one copy of the J. RIVER software program (SOFTWARE) on a single computer.  J. RIVER also grants you the right to install the SOFTWARE on a network, or any computer configuration which permits more than one user to have access to the SOFTWARE provided that you have first paid for a separate copy of the SOFTWARE or a license for each additional user, so that you have licenses for the maximum number of users who will be able to use the SOFTWARE. In no event may the total number of users on a network exceed the number of licenses acquired for the network.
Basically it says we need a licence for each separate copy.

However, in the Media Center 9 purchase FAQ it says:
Quote
Q: Can I install on more than one PC?
A: During the two-week period after you have purchased or restored, you can use the Install Key you received to activate the program on your other PC’s. You may use the program on your work PC and on your home PC's with a single license.

Are the rules changing in version 10 or is it just a simple oversight?

Scott.

edit: Of course, I clicked "accept" anyway :)

Hi Scott,

This is neither a legal nor a definitive answer (how's that for a disclaimer), but the rules have not changed for v10.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "simple oversight" with legal agreements. Complex oversights, sure.

In other words, what you say is completely irrelevant :)

Thanks for the reply, and clarification - although I guess I can't hold you to it :)
