Zone Manager
« on: February 11, 2004, 02:11:30 pm »

Is it possible to use zone mgr to control a sound card on another PC located on my network?   I have Media Server running on both PCs and would like to control the music/speakers on 2 different PCs on different floors in the house from a central location.

I could then listen to zone1 music while working on my office pc and control what plays on the other pc (whose sound card is hooked to receiver that distributes music thoughout the rest of house) from the office.

To control another computer, use the built-in "Remote Server". (Options > Startup) MC will run a web server that allows you to control it from anywhere in the world.

If you search, there are some great third party solutions built atop the same technology if you want a more feature-rich and graphical solution.

Went to options and checked the Remote Server and seemed to create it but am at a lost as to the next step.  How do I access the music from the remote pc client on the network?   Are there any help files I can read?

Try a search here.  Extend the default date range to 300 days or so.

I was able to logon to the Remote Server. :D  but I have a few questions:

1.  was playing a playlist and made additions to it but they did not appear on the remote client display.
2.  added a new playlist, it did not show up on the client side (went to server and closed MC and restarted but still the new playlist didn't appear!)
3.   doing a client display of:  Media Library/audio/artist-album displays individual tracks list not artist/album list.   also could you explain what play/insert/add is supposed to do?

My setup is PC1 (MC has all the albums and is the client side for the remote server).  PC2 is the remote server with its MC using media server to access PC1/MC albums.

thanks for your help.

I have searched for about an hour and I've not found anything.  Can you please give some specific direction?  What are some third-party, feature-rich, graphical solutions?

Remote Server works great - I just want to customize the HTML to put in nice eye candy, presentation of playlists, and graphical controls.

Thank you.

I agree that a nice looking web interface would be really cool. I could control MC from my MAC or even a Pocket PC.

Yes, sir, that is exactly what I have in mind as well.  I want to control MC from my Pocket PC.  I tried NetRemote, but I couldn't find a skin with al the functionality.

My friend, you obviously haven't done enough research on NetRemote. First of all it doesn't use skins (well, it sort of does, but not for what you think). Second of all creating the CCF files (an extension of the format used on Pronto remotes) is something anybody can do with a bit of reading and fiddling around. I have personalized CCF setups for my 800x600 units (regular computers and a webpad) and my PPCs. You will never find one that fits your requests perfectly, which is why you simply download one and modify it until it fits.

Thank you for your response Mastiff.  I did do my due diligence and I know about creating customized "skins" (maybe that's the wrong word - but it sounds better than customized control files) using Tonto or something else.

But really - all I want is eye candy...  which HTML will do just fine for me.  So if I can customize what generates the HTML for Remote Server, why should I bother with learning a new "lanugauge" (CCFs) when I already know HTML.

Or course, if you're willing to share some nice eyecandy, I'll say "Sir, thank you very much!".

My CCF is on the download page of NetRemote. That's for PPCs. And there's a few very nice CCFs for 800x600 units as well.

Well...  I guess the answer seems clear:  learn to modify CCFs if I want eye-candy specific to me.

I searched on the forums for information about Netremote bugs - and it seems pretty solid.  I think I'll go this route.

I wonder why the Media Center developers don't package more of these add-ons.  I use PlayingNow religiously - it should come preinstalled.  I think I'll be using Netremote a lot once I add my eye-candy - why couldn't it be preinstalled?
