You can use CDDB (in a pinch)- Here is how

I have thought long and hard about whether I should/should not publish this information - but I honestly cannot see any reason why I should not share it as I can see no harm in doing so.

I am sure I will be shouted down in flames if anyone thinks otherwise.

Maybe everybody else already knows this anyway and I am (once again) the last to know?

If you cannot access the CD track info from YADB, just use CDDB.
How? (I hear you ask)....

Open RealOne Player.

That will get the track info (I will not use that application to encode as it only allows 96bps mp3 encoding with the free version)

Then, when Media Centre cannot locate the track info, it will advise you:

*****************************************************
*  No information was found in the YADB database.                           *
*  Would you like to use the information from the local CD database?  *
*                                                                                             *
*                                                                   [Yes]      [No]      *
*****************************************************


Say [YES] and Media Centre gets the track info from your hard drive (where Real Player stored it)

Voila! Now you have the CDDB track info in Media Centre.

It is little convoluted but really only a few keystrokes and a lot quicker than typing 20 tracks manually (if you type like me).

You are not doing anything wrong as it is RealPlayer which is sourcing the info - which is exactly what it is suppoed to do - and Real have paid the licence fee to CDDB to do just that.

It is not J River's 'fault' if RealPlayer stores that information in a fully accessable, non-encrypted temp file is it?

Then - when you have ripped the CD - you can send that info into the YADB collective for others to use - Just as though you had typed it yourself, so there is no breach of anything really.

well, maybe J river will block this info in the future now that you brought it in the open.

That is just my point. Why would they even want to? Can you give me one valid reason?

They use the YADB because the CDDB is too expensive.

If you remember (or have been using the software long enough) - they used to use CDDB themselves.

They would gain nothing at all by blocking the facility to get track information from your own hard drive - no matter how it got there. And how it got there is not their problem.

Users of Media Centre get to use CDDB free of charge by using Real to get the data. Plus those albums get added to YADB so the database gets bigger.

That is what is called a "win, win situation".

And it has no negative impact on J River what-so-ever.


And J River cannot block it - Only Real can block it - by encrypting the file in which they store the track info - And they cannot block it in the current release anyway - we all have that one - it would have to be in the next release. And could they really be bothered? Why would they? - What impact does it have on them that the file in not encrypted and can be imported into other apps? Why would they care? And if they do - You just move to the next app which uses CDDB.

Having said all that, that is why I said:

Once again, what possible advantage would they gain by not allowing you to read it?
There would need to be some advantage in it not being there for them to go to the trouble of recoding the application to specifically remove a funtion which is already there.

In case this May violate CDDB's Licensing of the Data from CDDB for use in Media Center That Does Not Have a License for Said Data.

When JimH reads this he will not sleep tonight because he will be tossing and turning.

The same can be done using FreeDB via Exact Audio Copy.
The ability for users to get tags from whatever source is ultimately beneficial to the expansion of YADB.

I remember asking back in version 7 for a interface (this was when J river was comming up with YADB for MJ8).

the more programs that use it will increase the database, and with anyone that wishes to use it. they should include YADB Branding and a link to YADB, on yadb links to media center\J river

How about those of us that have paid for RealOne and/or MMJB that occaisionally still use CDDB "legally". Would a 'block' be able to tell the difference? Or would a 'block' block out ALL info obtained from CDDB legally or otherwise? That would be a real can of worms! ?
