Improving searching in MC 10
« on: February 18, 2004, 04:46:56 am »

I think searching in MC could be improved. At the moment we often need to change view schemes to search, for example if you are in Now Playing but want to search the media library.

This causes delays waiting for the view scheme to load.  I'd like to be able to define default searches so that no matter where I am in MC I can search where I want.

90% of the time I want to search for audio files on my PC AND on CD. At the moment I can't find a way to set this up without changing view schemes before I search or changing the search modifiers before every search.

Ctrl+F plus start typing is a fast way to search.

If you want to search a subset of files, you'll need to start from a smartlist (or view scheme).  Using 'Favorites' inside of MC (and the toolbar button) may help in those cases.

Couldn't we have something in the options panel which allowed us to choose between searching the media library OR media libray+cd  database locations?

I do two main kinds of searches;

1. Searching for music to play - the current default search of the media library is fine for this

2. Searching all database locations, since there is more to my music collection than just what's on my PC,  when I am checking to see what music I have before I make a decision about downloading music [normally I'm checking to see I don't already have what I'm intending to download .]  This is where I encounter delays as I need to switch view schemes.

I guess there is a deeper issue underlying this.  MC is both a jukebox and a media database.  The current default search setup is great for the jukebox function but not for the media database function.

If we had an option as to which was the default search option I'd go for the second option - searching the entire database.

I know that I can search either way at the moment, but having an option to choose the default search type would make things considerably easier.

I suppose I could define my media library to include my CD database but I'd then run into problems when using MC as a jukebox - volume not found etc.., so setting the default search location would be preferable.

Anyone else got any views on this?

Matt, I'm sorry to tell you, but with my 10.0.67 version it takes at least 4 seconds before I can start typing my query after I push the Ctrl-F.

Too long, if you ask me.

I agree with Sauzee , I hardly ever want to search just in what is Playing Now. Maybe there could be an option to change the default search behaviour.
