File Type Name
« on: March 04, 2004, 07:50:30 pm »

If I set Media Center as my default player it changes the File Type name for those types to "Media Center file".

I don't like this because I can't sort by File Type in Windows Explorer.  I tried to change the File Type name, but it changes it for all the extensions associated with MC.

I would like a different File Type name for each extension assoicated with MC...

MP3 "Media Center Audio MP3 File"
WAV "Media Center Audio WAV File"
BMP "Media Center Image BMP File"
JPG "Media Center Image JPG File"
MPG "Media Center Video MPG File"

Thanks,
 ?

hmm, i understand, but im not sure why you would want to do this. personally i love that mc reclaims all the file extensions, so its my one and only media player...

if you want to sort by file type do it from inside media center. having different files associated with different players will make it a mess when you start clicking on them and a bunch of players open up.

however if you really want to do it, this is how. Go to tools>options>file extensions> de check 'reclaim file extensions' box.

Then go to windows explorer>tools>folder options>file types
then select each file type and chose the program you want to be the default player for that type (eg. windows media player for wma, xxx for mp3, apple for aac, etc etc).

But i ask you why...

Pipsqueak.  I don't think he's asking to change the default program - he still wants to use MC.

But i ask you why...

Sometimes you simply want Windows' file explorer to sort by file type. There are a number of reasons why, and too numerous to list, or ask why.

You could change the file associations in MC for some or all of your files.  Just associate audio files, for example.

Then set the file associations for the other files in some other program (Windows Media Player, for example).

Neilio does not want to associate files with other programs - he wants to use MC.  He just wants to be able to differentiate between different types of files in windows explorer.  For example, oyu can associate Photoshop with .bmp and .jpg files but that does not cause all these files to be called Photoshop files in explorer.  They are still listed against their original file types.

Neilio does not want to associate files with other programs
I suggested it as a workaround.

JLee:

there is no other way to do it. once a file is associated with a player as a default program thats the 'file type' that will be shown. You can get explorer to show the extension, but only at the end of the filename, which doesnt help sorting.

Besides if the media is already added to MC, then as long as you work from within the player it doesnt really matter what the association is, MC will still play it. The only difference will be if you dbl click the file from within windows explorer

shAf:

Yup, of course there are, but if you want the files to be associated with MC, theres nothing you can do about it. Which is why i suggested using MC's 'my computer' functionality to use mc as windows explorer during those times you need to browse files by type (as the database has 'filetype' as a field and explorer does not'.
