Having Problem "Ripping" Unicode Albums
« on: March 08, 2004, 10:22:14 pm »

I recently upgraded to 10.0.85 and lost the ability to "rip" Unicode based CDs.  When I enter all of the Tag Information and then press "Rip", it does nothing and eventually crashes the Media Center.  I tried this on many CDs but with same result.  Only way I can "Rip" is to rip it before I enter the Tag Info.  However, the file information is then saved under "Unknown Artist" folder.  Am I the only one with this problem or Am I missing some simple step?

Here is my system info:
Media Center Registered 10.0.85 -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\

As a test, could you see if you enter non-Unicode album information if it'll rip properly?

Also, try switching the encoder to uncompressed wave to see if it's an encoder problem.

Thanks jinx.

Matt,

When I enter non-Unicode information to CDs, I am able to rip it properly.

When I change the encoder to uncompressed wave as you suggested, it rips but then after each song is ripped then I get following message:

Failed to update following files:
xxx (where xxx is fully qualified file name from root directory)
This can happen when files are missing, in use, read-only, or corrupt.

It looks like some encoders don't support unicode filenames.

To use them, you'll have to use more generic filenames that don't use international characters.

Sorry for the hassle.

Matt

This is an encoder prob.

But how people do?
I mean all french cannot have ??? by ???? as tags.

Beside it , i'am sure than testing YADB for Gateley i uploaded hebrew cds to YADB.
Ripper , converted ect to let it know.
Was on MP3 and it was working.
Was 2 or 3 summers ago.

MC itself and many of the input plugins and encoders properly handle Unicode.  The problem is when we use external programs / SDK's that don't properly support Unicode.

We'll see what we can do about fixing it.

Just have to say that I have been able to do it in previous version (9.1.316) using MP3 Encoder VBR in Normal mode.  I wanted to finish ripping my CD collection using the same method.  I will try using the 9.1.316 tonight and get back to you guys.

Hmmmm.... It didn't work with 9.1.316 either.  Now that I think about it, I haven't tried to rip unicode based CDs since the 9.1.316 was released.  Maybe it never worked properly in the released version.

Anyways, if you guys have any idea on how to bypass this limitation, I would greatly appreciated.  Also, I have to mention that the ripped version has to be compatible with IPod.

Appreciate all the help.

Thanks,
