No internal ASPI layer--ASPI files won't install
« on: November 23, 2002, 07:39:10 am »

I recently had to replace a totally crashed hard drive and reinstall everything, including Windows XP and Media Jukebox, and since then "Use Internal ASPI Layer" has been disabled. Considering that this is Version 8.0.388, and supposedly comes with its own ASPI, this was a surprise, but I went to Adaptec and downloaded new ASPI files too. According to aspichk.exe, the files WOWPOST.EXE and WINASPI.DLL didn't install, so I guess I have no ASPI layer. What am I doing wrong?
My system info is AMD Athlon 1200, Windows XP Home with Service Pack 1, IE Version 6.0.2800.xpsp1... and Media Jukebox Version 8.0.388

Even though "Use Internal ASPI" is disabled, is it checked?

WOWPOST and WINASPI are the DOS components of the ASPI layer for the pre-NT operating systems.  The 2 impotant files are ASPI32.SYS and WNASPI32.DLL

Can you burn and rip normally?

Can you post your "Help / System Info"?

I unchecked the "Use Internal ASPI", but it was checked; the generic driver and two-second gap checks were also checked and inaccessible. I haven't tried burning a disc without the gaps yet. I should also mention that though I haven't burned a disc since my hard drive crash, I did install a new burner last night. My system info is:

Media Jukebox PLUS 8.0.388
Install Path: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: AMD Athlon 1199 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 261 MB, Free - 128 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106

yep, I'm having the same problem as frobig... "use generic driver" and "add 2 second gap" are checked and grayed and I can't get them to change regardless of whether "use internal ASPI layer" is checked or not.  this is after installing most recent version of WinXP ASPI drivers. here's system info:

Media Jukebox  8.0.388
Install Path: H:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2385 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 523 MB, Free - 335 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106
ComCtl32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
wnaspi32.dll: 4.71 (0002) , ASPI for Win32         DLL, Copyright © 1989-2002 Adaptec, Inc.
Aspi32.sys: 4.71 (0002)

ASPICHK shows ASPI32.SYS and WNASPI32.DLL (both v. 4.71.2) present on my system; WOWPOST.EXE and WNASPI.DLL show as "not installed."

I'll admit that my burner doesn't show up on the goldenhawk list (it's a LITE-ON LTR48246S), but that seems unlikely to be the problem as there are lots of lite-ons on the list and my model number just looks like a slightly later edition of what's there.  besides, it was preinstalled by gateway, so it isn't like it's some weird obscure model.

would really appreciate any help.

I don't think JohnT ever implemented the "yeah, that's close enough" drive model analysis engine.

"Use internal ASPI" is grayed out on W9x & Millen Ed (from another John T post). It is for NT based systems only.

ASPI will not install correctly if MJ is running. Close down all apps before installing v4.72 (ASPI). Extract the ASPI file to a clean/empty directory. Then go to Start>Run (Windows Start menu) and browse to that ASPI dir. Run aspinit.exe. If install is successful it will want to reboot. Let it. Now go to that ASPI dir and run aspichk.exe. You should see a mix off 4.6 and 4.71.2 ver #'s. If so then ASPI is installed correctly.

You must have admin rights on NT based systems to do the install.

10-27

ps: If it's grayed out in NT/w2k/XP then you probably have a bad install. In that case: Backup license...uninstall MJ...update ASPI...reinstall MJ...restore license

thanks, xen-uno, for the help... uninstalled MJ, updated ASPI, then reinstalled MJ, and managed to get a clean ASPI install per ASPICHK -- ASPI32.SYS and WNASPI32.DLL v. 4.71.2, and WOWPOST.EXE and WINASPI.DLL v. 4.6 (1021) -- and also per MJ system info:

Media Jukebox  8.0.388
Install Path: H:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2386 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 523 MB, Free - 324 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106
ComCtl32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
wnaspi32.dll: 4.71 (0002) , ASPI for Win32 (95/NT) DLL, Copyright © 1989-2002 Adaptec, Inc.
Aspi32.sys: 4.71 (0002)

unfortunately, "use generic driver" and "add 2 second gap" are still grayed and checked and stay that way no matter whether internal ASPI layer is checked or not .  any other ideas?  unless it really is an unsupported burner issue, which didn't seem likely to me before but is looking more so now.

yeah, I probably had that one coming.  but I'd still be grateful for any other suggestions, if anybody's got 'em.

If it's not on the Goldenhawk list, then I think you're stuck, at least with version 8.   The version 9 beta does have a new burinng engine that doesn't rely on the Goldenhawk libraries and it does recognize more drives.  You'll have to judge for yourself whether running the beta is right for you though.  The current version, 9.0.82, is pretty stable for basic operation.

I Agree With RemyJ - Try MJ9

The Generic Driver In MJ9 Supports More Drives Than MJ8 Generic Driver.

Besides since JohnT is working on MJ9 it may be your best bet to get this fixed with your system and provide JohnT with Input if it does not work.

There is also Burner FAQ Html You can also check out

yep, MJ9 works just fine as long as I use internal burning engine rather than ASPI.  thanks for the help.
