Can't import wav
« on: November 19, 2002, 06:56:46 pm »

I recently installed real player 1.  Since then I can't import wav files to the media library in MJ.  If I try, wav doesn't even show up as a file type in the import window.  How do I fix this?

Try going into RealPlayer options/preferences and making sure that it hasn't hijacked your systems file association for WAVs.  If it has, dis-associate it, then see if WAV is available as a file type in the MJ import list.

Thanks for the advice.  However, I checked Real One preferences, and wav is currently assigned to Music Jukebox.  So, that is not the answer.

Any other suggestions?

Yes...uninstall RealOne...install RealPlayer...reinstall MJ.

Do a forum search for RealPlayer ( v8 ). There will be a download link. RealPlayer will play any Real streams and it coexists peacefully with MJ.

Everyone I know that has installed RealOne has had major problems.  Definitely go with an older version of Real Player.

Thanks Xen-Uno and Rocket Sauce for your advice.  I unistalled Real One, and downloaded RP-v8.  Then I upgraded to MJ-v8.  Now I can import wav files to the media library, BUT I now have another problem.  MJ imported my new wav files and dumped them all into a folder in media library named "[unassigned]".  This appears under Albums, Artist/Albums, etc.  It includes a gimish of tracks from different CDs, & LPs.  I have searched Help, but can't figure out how you add/create new folders under Albums, etc., or even rename ones that are there.  (Right click on an album name, and "rename" is grayed-out.)  Any suggestions?

Why are you dealing directly with the wave file (which are big & bulky) which can't be file tagged (though it can be pseudo tagged in MJ). If you want to stay Lossless then convert it to the Ape format. If you want smaller yet still good sound...go with Ogg. These formats are tagable (you'll have to do it manually, not sure MJ can fill tag info from filename). Once you give them complete tag info they will "move out" of the unassigned list.

Those items that you see in the Media Library, such as Album or Album/Artist are not actual folders.  They are "views" that are created automaically based on the tags in your files.  If you want to create a new View Scheme, right-click on Media Library and choose Add New View Scheme.

If a file does not contain tag information for a particular view, then it shows up as [unassigined].  The problem is WAV files do not support tags, so when you imported them, they are being sorted by their filenames and nothing else.  You can tell MJ to tag WAVs, but it does so only grudgingly and the tag info is saved only in the database, not with the actual files.

Like Xen said, unless there is some reason that you really need the actual WAV files, it would be better to convert them to another format.  If you are using WAV because you want high sound quality, convert them to Monkey's Audio (.ape).  It is lossless compression and the sound quality will be equal to that of the original.  If you decode an APE file back to WAV, you end up with a WAV that is exactly like the original.
