I assume it means something bad but I'm not sure what and how it got there in the first place.

Files showing the icon still exist in their folders and if I play them from outside MC, they play in MC, funnily enough showing the ratings that I had assigned and lost somewhere down the line.

Can someone explain what's going on here and what I should do about it?

Just upgraded to 10.93 from 10.82 but can't say for sure when any of this started.

Red cross means that the file does not exist in the path that MC is linking too.

I've heard of MC wrongly reporting that the file does not exist when it's a video file but cannot remember the solution.  You might try a search of the forum for "Red Cross".

What type of file is it?  Have you tried deleting it from the library and reimporting?

just remember to back up the library before doing a delete/import or 'update library'

Well, as it happens, I don't need help anymore!

After playing that red cross file from outside MC, then closing and reopening it, all the red crosses are gone. Even my ratings are back.

I don't understand it.
