How do you find a radio station's (streaming) url ?
« on: March 18, 2004, 06:14:44 am »

I already did a search (maybe not thoroughly enough ?), but couldn't find an answer.
I would like to know how you can find out what the streaming url of a web radiostation is.
I mean, the normal website adress of a station doesn't work of course when you type it under Streaming File.
Does someone know ?

Point to a sample site of one where you can't get or find the URL (more specifically...the *.pls).

1. Go to web site (in reg'lar browser).
2. Read web page.
3. Look for clues to the links. They usually have at least one exclamation mark at the end, and include such phrases as, "What's Playing!!," or "Listen Live!"

Play it in Web Media
Go to Playing Now
Open Tag Info in Action window
Copy from the filename field
Paste it where you want MC WMP Real
Not everything plays everywhere
You may have to strip out the ~streaming~ bit.

You can right click on a link on a web page and do "copy shortcut".

I have found all the Houston Texas stations with a Google search.

I searched Houston FM Radio & they all came up.

Not all stations have a URL for radio listening.

Only problem I have had is they are pretty erratic.  They will play sometimes in MC & the next time they may not.

Don't know if it is MC or the URL.

It was so erratic that I finally gave up altogether.

I really wanted it to work because with a fast DSL line the sound is pretty good, not as good as an FM tuner (which I now have) but good enough.

Also, there was not much CPU load with DSL.

It is something that I could live with if it was more reliable.

Maybe you will have better luck ::)

@xen-uno: I don't quite understand what you mean, probably because english is not my native language and I sometimes have difficulties to translate it to my own (dutch) language. Could you be more specific ?

Anyway thank you all for your replies. A lot of options, I see. I am gonna try them.

I think Doc has it right - a lot of the time its difficult to find a proper url. A lot of radio stations want you to connect to their website and not use MC (or anything else). Im not a radio junkie, but I too have had problems storing the ones I listen to regularly. For instance the BBC radio player is fantastic for catching up on last weeks shows - no download required - but getting the live stream for a BBC station into MC can be difficult.

Often you need to look for links and copy/paste as JimH and skidoo suggested. Overall, I dont think theres a standard way. It would help if you can tell us which stations you are interested in. Alternatively, play about with pasting links into MC.

Of course, if there is a general solution, Id love to hear it.

Ton,

What I meant was for you to post a link to a site (ie www.thismusicsucks.com...fake link) that has links you can't play. I (and others) could go to that site and look to see if the proper url's for MC exist.

Thanks xen-uno.
My question wasn't because I couldn't listen to a particular station but more a general one.
I noticed indeed that on most station's websites there is a "Listen" button or something alike and that when I click on that MC opens atomatically most of the times.
But in MC there is an option under File>Open URL>Enter URL of streaming File and I wondered how I should use that if I wanted to.
I suppose this option is of little use and that it is best to go to a station's website and click Listen or use one of the options mentioned above ?

Ton,

Those url's ending in pls should work...sample...
http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-playlist.pls?rn=3987&file=filename.pls

The link above is from ShoutCast...
http://www.shoutcast.com/

Interestingly, directly clicking on their Tune-In! button does not work...I had to copy & paste into MC>File>Open URL

URL's ending in ogg/mp3/wma should work also.

Rx

edit:...and neither does clicking on the *.pls link above. I'm using FireFox which may be screwing up the url (I don't think so, though...I get a FF dialog asking what I want to open it with....and Media Jukebox.exe is default)
