Library problems
« on: April 01, 2004, 08:41:08 am »

Hi all,
I have been through this couple of times in the forum. but the problem seems to be unresolved for me. I guess I have just a week more to end the trial period. Just one last final attempt. Hope somebody can trouble shoot it for me.

Trying do: Create a new library
Steps:
1. Installed the v103. and when the default 'search for media' in the local drives, did not let it do that.
2. File>library>library manager> add> new library created. Browsed a specific folder in D drive.  Clicked 'Load'.
3. Once the library loaded, file>library>import media> browsed for the D drive with folder containing mp3 files. Advanced option had mp3 checked (default)

Result:
It keeps searching. Files: 0 and nothing comes up. I have to end the MC using task manager as it will stop responding.

Second problem:
So to avoid the above said problem, I let the default search for media to locate files by pointing to specific folder in a drive when I first installed the program. This created a library. Worked fine, created playlists etc. But....
how do I 'update the library' as I added more mp3s to the folder it was pointing to. I went file>library>update library> it said 0 files removed etc. Nothing was added.  I tried to import media by pointing to the folder (file>library>import media). Once again it hanged up. MC did not respond.

Here is my system info:
Media Center 10.0.103 -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\

Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)
Intel Pentium 4 1694 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 261 MB, Free - 36 MB

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106 / ComCtl32.dll: 5.82 (xpsp1.020828-1920) / Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1400 / Shell32.dll: 6.00.2800.1233 (xpsp2.030604-1804) / wnaspi32.dll: N/A
Ripping /   Drive D:   Mode:Normal  Type:Auto  Speed:Max
  Drive R:   Mode:Normal  Type:Auto  Speed:Max
Digital playback: Yes /  Use YADB: Yes /  Get cover art: No /  Calc replay gain: Yes /  Copy volume: 32767
Eject after ripping: Yes /  Play sound after ripping: No

Burning /  Drive R: LG       CD-RW CED-8120B    Addr: 1:1:0  Speed:12  MaxSpeed:12  BurnProof:No
Test mode: No /  Eject after writing: Yes /  Direct decoding: No /  Write CD-Text: Yes
Use playback settings: No /  Normalization: None

The above is for my office system. Same problem is with my home computer also (maybe with different configuration in the system)

(i was really glad to see this program after playing with MMJB-it was un-user-friendly. But I am stuck with MC now)

PLEASE HELP.

Thanks.

It works fine for me.

How many files do you have in the folder?

Sometimes if you have many files in a folder (14,000 or so max for fat 32) it takes a long time.

I also have known some problems when there was a drive error and it seems like the program was stuck because there was an error in the dir. using "ChkDsk" fixed that problem.

How long are you waiting before you give up and manually end MC?

If I import from a networked drive, it takes 20 minutes or so before it tells me anything.  I would be surprised if your test with only 4 files should take anywhere near this long though.

Do you have 'Search Subdirectories' checked?

Are you sure you have the right file types checked?

Are you searching a network drive?

Is your library on a network or your local machine?

To add files to your library (if you imported on install), do what you described in the first part of your post, file, library, import media.  Update Library will search your library for songs that are no longer stored on your machine (where MC thinks they should be), and will remove them from you library.  Not what you are trying to do.

maybe your library files are corrupt?

maybe a cleared slate may help.

Hi JustinChase
>How long are you waiting before you give up and manually end MC?
As soon as the trial period ends

>Do you have 'Search Subdirectories' checked?
Yes

>Are you sure you have the right file types checked?
Yes. I used the default file selection. It has mp3 files checked already and several others.

>Are you searching a network drive?
No. Its on my hard drive.

>To add files to your library (if you imported on install), do what you described in the first part of your post, file, library, import media.
I haven't let the search go for more than 5 min in this aspect. the drive has more 4000 files (mp3s and avi's) maye I will let it go little longer and see.

Hi Kingsparta.

I guess my library files are OK, cos I have been able to play them. You want me to clear library?

thanks.

Not the media files but the Library data files.

File, Library, Clear Library

====================

if that don't help a uninstall, and make sure the

program files/j river folder is removed and reinstall.

no one i know is seeing this problem.

Browse to the folder using Drives & Devices > My Computer in the tree.

See what it shows.  You can right-click files from there and choose 'Import'.

If you can find a file that trips MC up, send it to matt @ jriver.com and the problem will be fixed in a build or two.

Thanks, and don't give up :)

Sorry, I meant, How long do you wait before you manually end MC with task manager?  I just wanted to know if you were waiting long enough for the process to complete.

Try what Matt suggested, that should work.  Don't worry, some here will get you squared away.

Normaly on a bad file MC would crash but maybe Matt over corrected and built more water tight doors.

This is quite strange. I did what Matt told. Now I am able to import media. I did as he said, right click> import from drive letters and also tried my previous method. It works in my office computer now.

Believe me guys!. I tried it so many times before I posted such a lenghthy post. Not sure, why it seemed to work now. However, glad it is is resolved.

I will test this in my home computer and see.

My heartfelt thanks to y'all for taking time to solve my issues.

Sorry guys, I am back.

really sorry for being so stubborn.

Office computer seemed to work but my home computer did not. (actually i have very few files in office computer -50's. while home computer has 4000's files/mp3). Maybe is it corrupted?

I would greatly appreciate if I can talk over the phone to Matt or J River tech support?

This is tech support.  There is no other.

You're getting good advice.

drb - I think that you'll find (as you have already seen) that the tech support on this board is way beyond what you would likely get trying to explain your problem to a tech support rep on the phone.

With this board, you are talking to the coders and they are walking you through your problems step by step.  If a fix is needed it will possibly be in the program in a matter of days.

After hanging out here a while, you'll likely see that phone calls would not be a satifying alternative.

Sorry for asking tech support over the phone. I got little desparate.

Maybe I will try uninstalling the v103 and install v104 and see if that solves any. Meanwhile, can somebody tell me how to save the playlists that I created and use it for v104? I am going to completely uninstall and reinstall the program, so I will loose the library.

look in media center\data\

the play lists are in there, copy that folder some place.

================================

there is also a backup library option

that will archive your library (i think it does play lists too).

Hi JimH,
I did not clear the library. Do you want me to do it?

Meanwhile as KingSparta said, I will back those files first.

Re:Library problems
« Reply #19 on: April 02, 2004, 08:13:44 am »

This is for sure!

Atlast i found out what my problem was.
I had 2 folders one with realmedia files (that were done when RP v7 or 6 was floating around with real producer) and the other folder with Video files converted to mpeg2 and some avi files.

Even if I select all files where importing. These 2 folders were not uploaded into the library.

Hence i removed these 2 folders and let MC import rest of the files.

Now the MC at home also works fine.

So the culprit were the files in those 2 folders.

Thanks for the help.
