Hello,

I have today purchased and installed MJ+ 8.0.388. I am running win98se on a Intel Pentium 465 with 128m ram.

I suscessfully ripped my first CD but when I tried to do a second one MJ crashed. First I get the message box, ["Gathering information ..."] then ["This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. If the problem persists, contact the vendor."] It then crashes.

I tried restarting and rebooting without success. I disabling CD Lookup but that didn't work. I "Cleared the Library" (I assume that rewrites the DB) but that didn't help. Everytime I select "CD, DVD, ..." it crashes.

The problem persists -- any ideas what I should do?

I've no idea what's going on, but the almost the same happened to me last night.....
I burned mp3 to audio cd successfully, (1st time, default settings, it worked, I was pleasantly surprised), after closing the ejected drive drawer, MJ correctly caught the audio cd, then tried to access YADB for info....
MJ hangs for a few minutes, then dialogue box pops up saying "unable to connect to database" or words to that effect. This box only has a "Cancel" button and a "close window (X)" button, press either button and the search/connect process happens over again. The only way to beat this was to close MJ via Task Manager. When in there, I also noticed, that while in this distressed state, MJ was commanding over 200Mb of RAM!!!!!!!!!
I played around with this for a while, trying with real, store-bought cd's etc, and got nowhere with it. So I uninstalled MJ, made sure MJ folder was gone, deleted MJ reg entries in HKCU and HKLM software lists, reinstalled, and now it seems to be working again.!!!!!

I am going to play with a cdrw later on, testing as I go adding plugins and skins etc, so if it happens again, i might get a clue why.

If anyone is already familiar with the problem, could you pass some knowledge on to grayeagle and myself, maybe save us some precious time and a headache

Forgot to mention above that one of the things I tried last night was a simple restart. After that, whenever MJ tried to access a cd drive, it just crashed out. No warnings, nothing, MJ would immediately close.

On my win98 machine MJ8 refuses to encode some cd's  that other programs will encode without problems.

Since a few weeks I use Rambooster for better memory management and MJ8 works alot better now, altough the program still crashes now and then...

btw: disabling digital playback on your cdrom-drive might help.

Hello,

Since I posted this message I have also uninstalled MJ, cleaned the registery as best I could (since uninstall didn't!), checked that the folder was erased, and then reinstalled. It didn't help.

I have screen captures if needed.

I need to load a new MP3 player before a trip this weekend.

Did you try the FAQ on CD burning here?  It's under Help above.

Are y'all current on ASPI? Latest is v4.72.

After updating, try switching between Internal ( default on B388 ) to External (uncheck the Internal checkbox). Location is Settings>Options>CD Writer Settings.

I do not have a External/Internal setting at "Settings>Options>CD Writer Settings". For the "CD Writer" section in "Settings>Options>CD Writer Settings" the options are "use generic driver" and grayed out is "use internal ASPI layer".

Yes. I read the FAQ, the Help file, and anything else I could find on your website. To no avail.

If you read my first message you will see that the first attempt at ripping was successful. I have ripped CD before. MJ screwed up on second and subsequent attempts.

Anything else you can think of?

I'm assuming you're talking about copying an audio CD onto your computer.

If it crashes during the "Gathering information ..." stage or just by clicking on the CD&DVD tree, it doesn't sound like a ripping problem. Therefore, I don't think updating aspi would help. It appears to have a problem displaying the contents of the CD.

Does it behave this way with any audio CD you put in, or is it related to a particular one? How about data CD's, does it still crash just by clicking on CD&DVD in the tree?

You didn't answer whether you have v4.72 or not. It's important to be current on EVERYTHING (OS Serv Packs, ASPI, DirectX, soundcard drivers, etc). It eliminates all variables.

Do this...Backup license...uninstall MJ...do all updating...reinstall MJ...restore license

Sorry - I am referring to Ripping (copying music CD tracks to hard drive) that will later be transfered to my MP3 player. But I am getting ahead of myself I haven't got to the transfer step yet. The problem is that MJ crashes when I try to read a music  CD.

When this first happen it was after I successfully ripped a CD to the hard drive. It was on the second CD I tried to rip that things began to go wrong. When I inserted the second CD in my CD drive and clicked CD&DVD in the tree MJ crashed.

First I get the message box, ["Gathering information ..."] then ["This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. If the problem persists, contact the vendor."]

It behaves this way with every music CD I try. I put a data CD (all jpg's and images) in as you suggested and MJ "gathered information" but didn't crash (of course it didn't display anything). BTW if the CD drive is empty clicking on CD&DVD doesn't cause a crash either.

Good News!

I have spent a day and a half installing, uninstalling, re-installing, etc.  I recieved MJ v7 with my NEX IIe MP3 player and installed it first. Then when I visited your website I downloaded v8 and installed it. Then I purchased v8+ and "installed" it. Nothing was working. I installed a couple of small conversion utilities. I then tried MJ again and it worked.

My guess is it must have been a library conflict (DLL). I have had a few crashes but got my MP3 player loaded so when I get back from my trip in a month I will have to take a closer look at it.

I like you program for it's feature set and interface.
