100% Cpu resources
« on: April 16, 2004, 09:12:54 am »

i'm new to media center.  just installed the software 2 days ago.  i'm impressed with the functionality, but puzzled by the number of problems i've been having.

i bought the software bundled with Cinemar's Main Lobby suite of products.  (and was charged $40 instead of the current price of $25).

i have been having lots of errors and max cpu usage problems.

i was receiving several popup error messages when i first installed the program.  i don't remember what the specific error messages were, but those have gone away since i did an uninstall/reinstall.

now i'm having problems related to cpu usage.  i have reinstalled the software twice and upgraded to the latest version, 10.0.115, but still no luck.

i can launch the program fine. i was also able to add a large number of mp3 files to the library.  one lauched, cpu usage hovers at around 3% and stays there.  then the problems start.

just double-clicking on a song sends cpu usage to 100% and makes the program unresponsive.  the only way out is to cancel out using task manager.

i am running windows xp home with all latest windows updates.  no other programs are running at the same time.  i can reproduce this over and over.

what should i try next?

update:

the cpu usage seems to be directly related to how many files are in view in the media library.

i have loaded 14,000 in the audio media library.

if i try to play a song when the entire library (14,000 songs) is in view, cpu usage immediately goes to 100%

if i play a song when the library view is filtered to a particular genre (2,200 songs), cpu usage cycles between 60%, 20%, and 10%

if i play a song when the library view is filtered to a particular artist (100 songs), max cpu usage is around 8%

i can reproduce this over and over.

14,000 songs in list view 100%
5,000 songs in list view 100%
3,000 songs in list view 80%
2,000 songs in list view 60%
1,000 songs in list view 20%
100 songs in list view 8%

Just got 'Runtime Error' message and the program terminated.  Will see if I can repeat it.

Are you selecting and starting these songs through MediaCenter, or a Lobby program?

I saw another thread mentioning the same sort of problem and they were also using the Lobby suite.  You might want to try only running MC and disabling the remote server under Tools->Options->Startup->Run Remote Server on port ...

Uninstall any third party plug-ins.

mhernie,

I posted on this recently and confirmed your findings.  It's a known problem with the MusicLobby Server plugin -- you'll find the problem goes away if you stop that plugin.

At the Cinemar forum, people have outlined ways to configure view schemes to minimize this happening, but the bottom line is that adding too many songs to Playing Now will bounce the CPU between X and 100%, while adding even more songs will peg MC at 100% usage and require a forced quit.  I'm hoping that Mario & Dan at Cinemar already know why this is happening and have plans to fix it.  No one needs so many songs in Playing Now, but it sure is easy to accidentally add all of the songs by artists beginning with "A" for example, by hitting the wrong button in MusicLobby...
