I use JRiver on XP with a Lynx22 analogue out and ASIO direct into an amp. I set all of the gain settings for the Lynx at max to ensure that all of the bits are being used and use the volume fader in MC9. I assume that MC9 chops off the bits to control the volume but I'm unsure. How does Media Center 9 control volume?

The only way to digitally reduce volume is to "chop off bits."  In real world listening, it's not as scary as it sounds.  With most CDs, the 2 or 3 lowest bits of the 16 bits are random noise anyway.

With MC:

In "System Volume" mode, the reduction will be done at the system / driver level.

In "Internal Volume" mode, all changes are done in our 32-bit player core.  This is ideal since it happens after DSP, fades, etc. while the data is still in 32-bit format for maximum resolution. (requires MC 9.1 or MC 10.0)
