help with G-Force
« on: April 18, 2004, 06:57:38 pm »

HELP!!!   Installed the G-Force plugin which I had awaited so eagerly...and it crashes MC!  :-[ I have uninstalled, re-installed and same prob.  I made sure that MC was closed before installing, started a tune and chose g-force under display and it sits there, the tune plays, but nothing else and then I get a message the Media Core has encountered a problem and has to close.  I'm up for suggestions on how to clear this up.

I was having a similar problem - everything would run fine, but then I'd get a Media Core crash, and the details in the error message indicated g-force.dll as the culprit.

It *seems* to be fixed - what I did is this.

For a variety of reasons, I had a suspicion that G-Force was having a problem with some image files, either cover art or backgrounds (sprites).

1) Some of my cover art was actually in GIF format, even though the file extension was .JPG - this meant that the cover art wouldn't show in MC, even though the cover art field said "folder.jpg". I opened the files with another program, and re-saved them as a true JPG.

2) I went throught the folder C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\Visualizations\G-Force\Sprites\(Auto Backgrounds) and made sure that all the files there matched type and extension - sure enough, there were a couple of mal-formed GIFs.

After doing this, I've been able to play a couple of 10+ hour playlists with no crashes. Make sure you have the latest G-Force, 2.6.1

G-Force is a very "clean" install - all of the prefs, boot files, etc are kept in its directory. I don't think it does anything to the registry.

IrfanView is good at detecting incorrectly extensioned files...and since IV uses the mouse wheel for scrolling through the images, corrections are quick and easy.

Thanks for all the help. Since I have a huge library and lost of cover art and photo's,  I decided to try an uninstall of MC and then reinstalled first before attempting to find a corrupted file...and this seemed to work. so am not going to mess with percieved perfection (also really hated the idea of having to check so many files!!!)  Again, thanks.  It's nice to know that I can count on getting a quick response to a problem no matter how seemingly trivial....another reason I love, love. love MC!   B ;D
