Broadband -- We've Reached the Tipping Point
« on: April 18, 2004, 06:30:33 pm »

From Yahoo News:

"More than half of U.S. Internet users now surf the Web over a high-speed connection as home users signed up in droves for the faster service in the past year, according to a report released on Sunday."

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&ncid=578&e=5&u=/nm/20040418/ts_nm/tech_broadband_dc

Things should get a lot more interesting now.

please dont use this as a justification to forget the other 49% of us still to convince parents/ourselves of the pressing need to upgrade to broadband! we're working on it, honest, but bear with us until its more like 80-20

Or the other % of people who have to convince the telephone company to install an exchange close enough or extend the reach of broadband.  I'm just about to fork out for a satellite dish at a ridiculous installation price and monthly subscription on a 12 month contract.

It currently takes me 1.75 hours to dl MC.

Yes, I was one of those who signed up last year for DSL.

LOVE SBC DSL ;D ;D ;D

MC download in under 2 minutes.  It usually takes just 90 seconds.

I'm getting 2.9 Mbits per minute... that's 65 times faster then I ever got with 56kbit dialup ::)

Hardly ever goes down.

Needless to say, I am one happy camper ;D ;D ;D

I understand that some foreign countries, especially Canada, are way ahead of the US in broadband use.  Seems they have had it longer & is often cheaper & faster then US broadband.

Not all DSL or other broadband is created equally.  When I signed up for SBC DSL there were many choices when it came to available speed.  The price they advertise on TV & elsewhere is for the slowest speed, still much faster then dialup, but not the blindingly fast throughput that we know & are familiar with at work as a T1 line.  That is what many of us think of when we hear broadband.

I was lucky, SBC was offering the next up in speed at the same price as the advertised TV price plus I am only 2,000 feet from the main DSL junction point.

They said I would get something like 900 K bits/s but due to the free upgrade & the closeness of the connection I always get 2.7 - 2.9 M bit/s.

Needless to say I Am VERY happy with that
