Media Server problem
« on: April 18, 2004, 04:58:11 pm »

Okay I have Media Center 10.0.116.  Media Server is 1.0.197.   Machine info dump below.

My problem is that Media server starts, but when a client connects everything looks good, but the list of media never shows up on the remote client.

Here is the server log (can I get more info?)
04/18/04 14:25:21 - received a connection
04/18/04 14:25:22 - Current Connections: 1
04/18/04 14:25:22 - sharing thread started
04/18/04 14:25:22 - request for library
04/18/04 14:25:26 - sharing thread exiting

I have 44,831 files in my library.  I have about 30k more files to add to the library.  Broken out as:
Audio: 5234
Images: 38917
Video: 680

Hmmm so I figured it out.  Looks like all clients have to be the same version??  My laptop was running 10.0.113 and the server was 10.0.116.  After upgrading the laptop... all good.  Does the server not support backwards compatability.

I am a total newbie at MC and am considering a media server to send music to my whole house stereo.  Any guidelines on how to do this and what equipment is needed?  Is media server an add-on?

Thanks,

Scott

I'll move this to a new thread later, but for now...

Media Server is part of Media Center.  You can read about it in the Help file in MC.

If you want to pipe your music into your stereo, you can use a small PC to do that or you can try doing it with one of the devices called "Media Receivers".  There are a lot of them and there isn't much standardization.

MC works with the Sony Media Receiver and with a Series 2 TiVo if it has Home Media Option.  There is a TiVo board here.
