[bug] analyzing thumbnails...
« on: April 27, 2004, 05:44:30 pm »

If I preform a search like [name]="Bla Bla", it will take about a second to show files in details view but it sticks on 'analyzing thumbnails...' when in thumbnail mode. All thumbnails are created. I can leave it sit there for 5 minutes and nothing.

Also want to mention that rating files, in thumbnail mode takes a lot longer...about 4 times as long. Maybe MC is refreshing the entire list?

Just doing normal browsing like 'Artist/Album' is pretty quick in thumbnail mode.

I dunno.

You mean you'll never even see files if you do a search in thumb mode?

What if you search for something you know there'll be hits for, like "a"?

I know there will be hits (as I preform the same search in detail mode). I also checked that putting the search inside a view scheme works fine. Changing from details mode to thumbnail mode (after the search) works fine. It's just from searching in thumbnail mode from the search bar at the top.

What if you click on something in a pane (like "Aerosmith") and then search?

Or what if you search with the wizard?

How many files do you have now?

Has anyone else ever seen this?

Thanks Dragyn.

I guess it's happening when changing to another view inside the window from a large list of thumbnails.

It does it with panes (clicking on an artist, year, etc) or the search at the top.

The slow down is still there with less files viewed but it still gets stuck on analyzing thumbnails. When I say getting stuck, I'm talking over 10mins of wait time compared to 1-3secs in detail mode. Doing tag info changes is slower too in thumbnail mode depending on the size of the list.

Details mode is instant in all cases.

Could some of the files be on a missing drive, so that windows is taking a long time to say whether they're there?

Are all your thumbnails built?  Could it be sticking when getting the thumbnail for a certain file? (building or loading)

Any chance you could send a library backup to matt @ jriver.com?

All the files are on the same local drive. All the thumbnails are built. This is when I started seeing this. It's probably because there are a lot of them built and it's scanning the directory. Why would it scan the directory if it's just changing search parameters?

That's where the problem is. When you go from a large list display to a small list display, it looks as if MC is scanning thumbnails from the previous large list display.

Details mode is still fine. Maybe my library is corrput.

Remember when I had an import file problem? Well that's fixed now because I got more ram. I haven't had any real crashes since then. But I'm still using the same library from before.

I'll probably start fresh and see what it's doing. I'll try it before and after all the thumbnails are built.

MC doesn't do any thumbnail analysis / directory scanning anymore, so I'm not sure why it's slow.

It only works on the visible thumbs.

Could you test a debug build if we put it up somewhere?

Thanks Dragyn.

I can do a test. I'm also seeing stuff like ~nodup being slow too within a view scheme with few files.

I still haven't redone the library yet. Trying to do other stuff in MC right now.

still there in v11

huge list displayed, very very slow .
semi-huge list displayed; somewhat slow
few displayed; fast

only in thumbnail view. details is super fast

I just reimported most of my files and there are hardly any thumbnails built at this time.
