All of my CDs have been ripped to the wma format.  I plan on using files in the mp3 format.  Should I convert all of my files? Which has the best sound quality?

If your talking about transcoding from wma to mp3...it's generally not a good idea. The mp3 will sound worse than the original...so re-ripping/encoding is your best bet.

Ogg is my favorite...for the quality setting (in MJ) use Normal or Normal/High...files will be in the 200+ kb/s range. I use the oggenc.exe external encoder (in EAC) and use -q 8 for the quality setting.

MP3's sound very good too when done right...in MJ use the Normal or Normal/High setting with the VBR encoder. They'll also be in the 200 kb/s range. I use EAC here also with the --alt -preset standard option for the LAME ext encoder.

Good quality --- OGG ( Normal / High )

Normal Quality --- MP3 VBR ( High )

Worse Quality --- Wma, Mp3PRO


Ape is LossLess meanning that the encoded file is like the original CD or Wav Byte for Byte

MPC is considered the best of lossy formats

OGG is a good format but it's not tunning for high Frequencies

Mp3 is good but Ogg is better

and DON'T RE-CONVERT YOUR FILES, if you want good quality Re-Rip all the cd's again

Short On Disk Space? And Want To Stick With MP3. Use MP3 VBR With A Setting Of High.

MP3 VBR With A Setting Of High Will Render Very High Quality From 160kbps to 320kbps and since it knows where to use more data and when not to it will save room on the old hard drive.

The MPC and OGG (Another VBR Format) formats are not widely supported and are not good choices because of that, but they do sound good.

MP3Pro is good for MP3 Portables but does not stand up to quality as maybe a MP3 320Kbps or VBR mp3 file does.

So you do want to convert from WMA to MP3?

First you need to convert to MP3 (in MJ go to Tools>Convert Format...see at top where it says New Format?...hit the Change button and pick the MP3 VBR option and choose your quality level). Now that you have your MP3's on your hard disk, you need to create a new playlist with them. To burn to CD check out the MJ help file.
