Speaking of bumping... ?

How are you guys coming on these requests?

Should we be expecting to see them?

Soon?

Later?

This version?

In another version?

None are good enough to consider?

Matt doesn't have the skill to give us what we want?  (John or Peter will have to do it, I guess :-X)  What?

You've already released everything, and I slept throught it?

Everyone else got it in a PM, but you don't like me?

You were actually hired by my ex-wife, and this whole thing is just a big illusion to get me all psyched up, and you're really gonna just put me through the ringer again?  (impressive, but mean >:()

Is it because we haven't said the magic word yet?

Please?

I read about half way through the thread today.  Some of it is useful and will appear.  In general, it's a little hard to see a pattern.

We will probably add a few simple edit functions.

Anyone else see a clear pattern to requests?  Requests that are common will get priority.

I think the problem is people kinda feel like, "oh, yeah, that's a good idea", and  "here's another one", but they never tell you that they also like 3 or 5 of the other ideas already brought up, so, you're only seeing most ideas only once, since no one isrepeating the good ideas.

Does that make any sense?

What I think is needed is people to tell you all of the good ideas they have seen, so you can see how many people like a particular idea, if if gets repeated by most, it gets in.

If someone has free time, a list of the requests so far would be a good summary post people can comment on, and maybe the popular requests would be first.  I am just walking out to dinner, but I might make some time later to work on this.

If anyone makes a list, please include number of requests or just leave out anything requested once.

2 requests:

I would like to be able to right click on any thumbnail and have an option under 'Image' which would open just that picture in a separate window, where I can zoom in and out and perform some basic manipulation tasks (at least Crop and Rotate), and then have a number of Saving options (at least Save, Save As and Save Copy {with AutoRename}, but possibly also save to a pre-ordained copies folder or customisable list).  Ideally this window would have a customisable toolbar.

I would also like to be able to tag the images on my Ixus before downloading them (I realise that the tags are only saved in the library file, not in the camera files).  This would make the process of identifying and organising new images more intuitive and enjoyable for me.

Thanks for asking...   :)

Anyone else see a clear pattern to requests?  Requests that are common will get priority.

I’ve just spent the last 2 hours going through this thread to see what kind of patterns I could find, so here are the results, in my interpretation:

The main areas seemed to be:

Importing
Tagging
Library Viewing
Image Manipulation
Playback
Further Use

So, pretty much everything that MC does!  Well, here are what I took to be the main suggestions in these areas:

IMPORTING:
Determine the orientation of images (landscape/portrait) – v. popular
EXIF-
import EXIF to calculated fields – v. popular
  auto-name from EXIF
duplicate files on ‘Send to External Application’ and save EXIF for duplicated original
Import to folder by date – popular
Designated auto-import folder
Preview images on camera – v. popular

TAGGING:
Tag images on camera – v. popular
Display only tags specific to media, eg when using dropdown ‘Genre’ field, show only genres used for images – popular
Related:  Separate/Editable presets for using ‘Rename File from Properties’ with images – v. popular
Tagging images while playing – v. popular

LIBRARY VIEWING:
View large images – v. popular
View large images windowed – popular
Calendar browser view
Separate thumbnail sizes for images – v. popular
Generate all thumbnail sizes for data CDs
Sorting tabs for thumbnail view
Thumbnail column for detail view

IMAGE MANIPULATION:
Rotate and Resize – v. popular (I know these functions exist already, but they got mentioned a lot, and it seems as though the functionality of these should be expanded to include more options for saving copies)
Image correction – a couple of mentions, but at least one request to omit it…
Save correction to tags for viewing without changing the original file
Printing-
  custom printing templates - popular
  collate option

PLAYBACK:
Skip through images used in 3d visualisations
Expanded/Improved autopan and zoom – v. popular
Image ‘hotspots’ for zoom
Configurable display of tag info in playback, ie custom font sizes and background colours
Display ‘captions’ in Playing Now (not sure what captions are, but it’s mentioned quite a bit)
Easily view image properties in Playing Now
Separate playback controls for audio and images in the playback window, ie don’t pause music when image playback paused
Refined timer control in playback
Action Window image to follow Playing Now

FURTHER USE:
Create slideshows, wallpaper changers and screensavers - popular
Burn slideshows, wallpaper changers and screensavers to CD/DVD – popular
Create/burn slideshows, wallpaper changers and screensavers with music tracks
Send combo audio/visual playlists to screensaver-maker
Burn images to CD/DVD while leaving screen-res catalog in library
Create menus for CD slideshows
Templates for web-uploads
Convert view-schemes to HTML

It has to be said that this is not a scientifically perfect analysis of the suggestions, but I thought it might help…

Maybe we could set these up as polls, so people can return to the topic and vote for certain features; I think that could be messy, but maybe the J River crew could do it for us, thereby limiting the options to features they are actually able/prepared to implement…

Rock on, J River!!    ;D

Lossless resize/rotate of images with saves to a different folder or new filename. I don't like to lose my originals.
Complete storage/use of EXIF info
Easy importing, like the Camera Wizard in Windows XP.
Ability to do mass changes by selecting the images and the operation. Like checking several and selecting rotate clockwise 90 degrees.
Plain English commands, like rotate image(s) 90 degrees clockwise. Sometimes I'm just too stupid to remember 1/4 right.
Use of system color profiles if they are there.

I am not interested in editing capabilities past being able to resize and rotate.

*snip*
3) Use a combined audio/image playlist and store it to a screensaver *.src file with a specific name like "Summer screensaver" "Winter Screensaver", "Family screensaver" etc.
4) From the same audio/image playlist creating an executable *exe file that can be burned to a cd.
5) Same as 4) combined with a cd autorun feature
6) Same as 4) combined with a read only or trial version of MC9 to be burned on cd, so that it can be given away and could be transformed into a full working version. So we could give a way a trial version combined with preselected content.
*snip*

I was thinking of some similar ideas but I was looking at Flash as the underlying technology.  This way you could push the slide show to the web.

I'm pretty sure the .SWF format is public but you might need to license something from Macromedia to do this.

Yes, thank you.  It's pretty much exactly what I had in mind, but not the time to do.  I think that should help J River nail down the things we want, and what order to implement them.  Hopefully.

Thanks again for the effort.

Is there any way someone can set up a page where users can vote on their top 5 requests from this list? That might give J River an idea which ones are most popular.

I vote for this as well.  A way to view and edit a single image in a separate window would be ideal.  Cropping and simple image adjustments would be great and then a way to save the edited version with a link back to the original file.

That does it for me (though three's a bit limiting)!
Preview images on camera
Tagging images while playing
custom printing templates

Image correction (cropping / colour correction but preferably applied at display time so as not to recompress the image)
Expanded/Improved autopan and zoom
Image ‘hotspots’ for zoom

(Tagging images while playing - I'd really like this for music more than images, particularly if it could be done with the remote. e.g. Play all tracks with unassigned Mood, then hit a button on the remote to assign the current track a Mood tag)

My votes:

-Cropping and simple editing in a separate window
-Custom and more preset templates (with navigation) for web page generation (i.e. "Send to web")
-Custom printing templates with ability to select specific image for different image "locations" in template

Goog quesition.

Music and movie have they own name, independant of us, our images are ours, personnaly.

I do not use MC to look at images. Only Acdsee 5 and Paint Shop pro to make important changes.
Why?
Do not want to look at images by only a slide show.
I want to rename with batch.
The most imortant for me : I'd like to browse my directory to find the folder, double click on an image and tape space bar to go further, double click to go back in the directory.

With MC, you can browse to the image, double click to view full screen, and double click the screen to return.

Display ‘captions’ in Playing Now (not sure what captions are, but it’s mentioned quite a bit)

Jim, Long time no speak, last I wrote to you was regarding some business development ideas I had for MC.  :-)

Now I'm writing to answer your question specifically as it relates to captions, or more precisely "closed captions" as used on a TV, not to be confused with album captioning which seems to be also discussed in this thread (per EpF's comments).

Since I am a hearing-impaired viewer of television and have a long history of broadcast and postproduction credits, I feel somewhat qualified to help you understand the nature of what I believe is an important feature as discussed by DocLotus.  I myself have tried to use captioning with MC 10.0.146 and it has been intermittent, jerky (when crop is off) and in the middle of the screen.  Thus far the use of captioning with MC has been unreliable and unusable.

To be fair, I'm not sure if it is a hardware issue (I'm using Pinnacle's PCTV Deluxe) or software.  If it is the latter, then I suspect that you should be able to provide captioning decoding and allow users to positiong where the caption is on the PC screen.  At least that would be my wish.

FYI, there is a analog standard (EIA-608) and digital standard (EIA 708) that applies to the encoding and decoding of closed caption data for television viewing.  With analog NTSC or SMPTE 259M, EIA-608 caption data is supplied on line 21 of the VBI.  With HD-SDI, (SMPTE 292M), caption data is supplied as part of the digital serial bitstream, typically on line 9.  So if you are serious about providing captions as a benefit of MC, then you will need to decode both; though EIA-708 is still nascent and there aren't any digital decoders on the market yet (might be a biz dev idea for you).

Anyhow, I'm writing to see if you could provide a general or specific idea about what your plans are to provide reliable and usable closed caption decoding for tv viewing via MC.  Inquiring minds would like to know.

Overall, I LOVE MC and recommend it every chance I get!!!

Kind Regards,  D.

There is a board here called "TV Cards...." where you can talk with Yaobing, our TV expert.  You might want to copy your post and paste it there.

There are a lot of standards to choose from.    ;)

I'd like to make an anti-Feature Request. :P

Please do not get all highbrow on us and start trying to use the embedded color profile to display the image.  Or better yet, if you do, at least allow us to choose the color profile (or none).

I mention this because Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 starting doing this, and now all my camera's images look horrendous--as well they should in that sRGB color space.  What's frustrating is that there seems to be no way to make APA stop managing the color.  >:(

(Note:  I use SpyderPRO to calibrate my monitor, so I know that's not the issue.)

The main areas seemed to be:

Importing
Tagging
Library Viewing
Image Manipulation
Playback
Further Use

So, pretty much everything that MC does!  Well, here are what I took to be the main suggestions in these areas:

IMPORTING:
Determine the orientation of images (landscape/portrait) – v. popular
EXIF-
import EXIF to calculated fields – v. popular

TAGGING:
Display only tags specific to media, eg when using dropdown ‘Genre’ field, show only genres used for images – popular
Tagging images while playing – v. popular

LIBRARY VIEWING:
View large images – v. popular
View large images windowed – popular
Calendar browser view
Separate thumbnail sizes for images – v. popular
Thumbnail column for detail view

IMAGE MANIPULATION:
Save correction to tags for viewing without changing the original file

PLAYBACK:
Skip through images used in 3d visualisations
Expanded/Improved autopan and zoom – v. popular
Configurable display of tag info in playback, ie custom font sizes and background colours
Display ‘captions’ in Playing Now (not sure what captions are, but it’s mentioned quite a bit)
Easily view image properties in Playing Now

FURTHER USE:
Create slideshows, wallpaper changers and screensavers - popular
Burn slideshows, wallpaper changers and screensavers to CD/DVD – popular
Create/burn slideshows, wallpaper changers and screensavers with music tracks
Send combo audio/visual playlists to screensaver-maker
Create menus for CD slideshows
Templates for web-uploads
Convert view-schemes to HTML

Jim,  thanks so much for implementing more image handling features, I think it is very necessary and very welcome.  I hope they are in V. 10 soon and not postponed to 11.  Any thoughts on that?

I edited the above list and left in the ones that are top in my book.  I hope that helps.

I think you should look at other programs like Picassa which I think does  image handling well (in some ways).

Usability is always a challenge with Media Center.... you have so many great functions, sometimes its hard to get to them all or know how to use them all.  I think many people use media center to play music and have photos displaying.  I think some basic improvements around slide shows would be welcome by many people.

thanks for requesting our input.

It would be really nice if ISO, Aperture, Exposure Time, Focal Length, Exposure Compensation, Flash (not fired/fired & mode), and White Balance were all available as calculated fields that directly mirror the EXIF info.

-John

Yes, please.
Yes, Full EXIF support ... we can work with the fields and create calculated fields if necessary, but camera support MANY more fields (by a factor of 10-20 ) than is currently supported in MC.  I like to know ISO, Aperture, Focal Distance (Min & Max as well, so I can tell the lense) Make/Model of Camera, Flash Type, Metering Mode, White Balance mode, etc ..

What about a more general way of allowing the user to map existing EXIF/ID3v2 tags to MC fields? Otherwise, J River will be constantly running around after people who want to be able to get at the "temperature when the photo was taken"/"third violinist" field etc. Some kind of wizard that will list everything in a file and allow you to say "Make an MC field of out this"

I'm not gonna read all of this but one thing I don't like is when you play an image file with a video file in the mix, it always starts the video. Audio file I can see happening but not on a Video file.
