Ratings from ITunes without IPod
« on: May 12, 2004, 11:53:09 am »

I'd like to switch from Itunes to MC, but I've rated 3700 songs in Itunes and would hate to do it again. I read that if you have an IPod, ratings will convert to MC, but what if you don't have one? 3700 songs is a lot to rerate, so if there isn't a way, I probably won't make the switch. Can anyone help?

Whether ratings will import to MC depends on the filetype. If mp3, this should work. If AAC, it will not at this time but can be added in the future.

None of the MP3s work.  :'( Of course, I'm evaluating, so maybe that's the reason? That's the one thing hanging me up on buying MC.

Thanks for the info. I'll check back here to see if anyone else has the same problem.

Tried reimporting, but still no ratings.

iTunes appears to not always write the rating info into the file tag. If the rating is not in the file tag, MC cannot read it. You can verify this by opening a file that appears rated in iTunes in a hex editor and look at the value of the 'Rating' field, or you can email me one of your files and I will look if the value is there.  If the rating is not written to the file tag, iTunes is storing the information in its database and we do not currently provide a way to extract this information from iTunes database.

I checked the ITunes board and it seems the rating is not saved with the file, it's saved to an XML file. Oh well.
