iPod unnecessarily converting mp3 files - long sync
« on: May 12, 2004, 12:46:40 pm »

I have a library full of mp3, ape, wma etc.... files.  I recently upgraded to 10.0.130. In 9.x when I would sync these files to my ipod the mp3 files would just transfer and the others would convert and transfer.  Now, everything is converted.  Mp3's are converted to Mp3s which adds significant (unnecessary) time to the syncing process.

If I uncheck "force convert" then the mp3's are transfered but none of the other files are converted, so they return an  error from the ipod and don't play.

I think there used to be an option to skip duplicates but the option is no longer available in the syncing options.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ben

Ben,

The option to skip conversion on files with the same file type went away when we switched to the simultaneous decode and encode of converted files. It will be back in the near future. Sorry for the delay.

Ok, I'll switch back to 9 until its available.  (The simultaneous encode decode is great!)  I assume this will be listed as a feature on a new release?  Or how can I check to see when it has been reimplimented?

Thank you,
Ben

Ben,

The reimplementation of it will be listed in the history for the build. Thanks for your patience.

not related to ipod, but this thread came up when i searched for "skip duplicates".   I am using MC 10, and I have ripped my 300+ CD collection to .ape format.   I am now converting them to .mp3 128k onto another drive (so I will have 2 copies, mp3 for streaming, ape for home listening)

I select all 2000 files, right-click, Library Tools -> Convert Format
Then click on Options button, for Converter, I have "Skip Duplicates" checked.  I let this run for 10-12 hours, and Media Center froze at some point.   I don't have the point at which it stopped converting, so I'd  like to select all 2000 files, and convert, and let it skip the ones its already done.  But, it doesnt skip, it creates a second mp3 with (1) in the filename.  Thus I have 2 copies:
01 - Surfin Safari.mp3
01 - Surfin Safari (1).mp3

How do I get it to skip the ones I've already done?

I have the same issue when trying to convert mp3 to wma to load on my Nomad.  The skip duplicate does not work - It creates an additional wma when one already exists in the library.  I am storing the new file (wma) in a different directory and am NOT updating the database, but still having the dup problem.  When will this be addressed and fixed?

Buddy:
I'd suggest importing all your converted mp3's then putting this in the search box
~nodup=[name],[artist],[album],[track #]
That should show you all the files that haven't been converted and you can just convert them.

Can not get that ~nodup to work - it leaves some wma's as not having dups.  Not true.  Is it a bug or is it me.......  that is the question
