DVD decoder
« on: May 28, 2004, 03:56:32 pm »

In playback properties the DVD decoder is listed as InterVIdeo.

My version only supports 2 speakers. I can upgrade it to support 7.1 for $50.

I also have Power DVD which I can upgrade for $30.

The picture quality for both seems the same.

Can I change the DVD decoder in MC to use the Power DVD one or am I stuck with using InterVideo?

I have never tried MC for DVDs, but if you can select separate filters for audio and video, like you can in ZoomPlayer (which I use on my CRT projector) you should simply download the free AC3 filter. Then you won't have to pay. And stay with WinDVD for video, it's a lot better than PowerDVD, which is very inferior in many respects. Especially when it comes to details.

MC uses the default filters, which should be the last ones you installed.

You can see what MC is using in the DVD properties.

We will allow user selection in this area before too long.

Thanks for the replies. So does that mean I can't get 7.1 sound from MC yet?

If that's not the case I'd really appreciate a 'how to'?

Thanks

If it uses the last installed you could simply try to download and install AC3 Filter and see if it gives you 7.1.

How odd! I have the free version of PowerDVD that came with my DVD drive and in "S/PDIF Passthrough" mode, I get Dolby Digital or DTS surround from the DVD. Could the upgrade price possibly refer to some other kind of thing, like analog outputs or something?

Your amplifier/receiver hardware, beyond S/PDIF, is doing the decoding ... you do not need to decode it before S/PDIF.  Only those of us who use the analog outputs of our sound cards need decoding beforehand.
